Ossan Saikyō Chapter 10 Part 06

Nothing of note happened until the night of the second day on the road.

As usual, our campsite was comfortably set up, and Mariane seemed particularly impressed by it.

Just like with the Gigant Viper, adventurers capable of storing as many things in an【Item Box】as I could were apparently quite rare.

Since the skill's storage capacity depended on stamina and strength, adventurers who met those conditions were naturally few in number.

Of course, Freynil's «Barrier» and Sphenia's『Elemental Magic』were also major factors.

“With these,〈Saul's Guidance〉can live comfortably anywhere as though staying at an inn. I believe this gives you an enormous advantage when tackling large-scale dungeons or undertaking long-term missions.”

She gave us her wholehearted approval.

Since we'd recently come into a considerable amount of money, we'd even upgraded our bedding, which she also seemed to appreciate.

The problem arose on the third day.

As we walked along the highway winding over gentle hills, we noticed about 20 or so travellers gathered near the top of one of them.

Three wagons were also stopped there, and the horses harnessed to them were visibly frightened.

It looked like something lay beyond the hill.

The distant sounds of clashing weapons and beastly growls drifted toward us.

Mariane looked at me.

“It seems adventurers are fighting a monster on the other side of the hill. There was a subjugation request issued for this area, so the monster may have wandered onto the highway.”

“In that case, should adventurers passing by help them?”

“Generally, unless they specifically request assistance, it's better not to interfere. Otherwise disputes over the reward distribution can arise.”

“I see. Either way, let's go up there and take a look.”

We jogged up the hill.

Beyond the crest, the road sloped gently downward.

At the bottom, an adventurer party was indeed facing off against a monster.

There were four adventurers, and from this distance they appeared to consist of one man and three women.

Their opponent was a gigantic six-legged lizard.

Its tail was unusually short and thick, yet it still measured around 15 meters in length.

Its entire body was covered in crimson scales, giving every impression it could breathe fire.

“No doubt, that's the Salamander from the subjugation request. However, it's considerably larger than the information indicated. If that party accepted the request based on the original report, they may be in serious danger.”

Just as Mariane feared, it looked as though the sword and naginata wielded by the male and female frontliners weren't dealing enough damage.

The icicle spears cast by the mage in the rear appeared to be around C-Rank level, but even 10 of them striking together only managed to strip away a few scales.

The adventurer party itself seemed reasonably well coordinated, so their level of teamwork wasn't bad.

As Mariane had said, the problem was simply that the monster was stronger than expected.

Then flames erupted from the Salamander's entire body.

Wrapped in fire, the giant lizard charged straight at the party.

Perhaps thanks to its 6 legs, it moved astonishingly fast despite its enormous size.

We watched to see what would happen.

To my disbelief, the party turned and fled... straight toward us.

(E/N: Watch how the drama ensues in the next chapter…)

Naturally, the Salamander gave chase.

With so many ordinary travelers nearby, panic erupted instantly.

“Seriously? Are those idiots?”

As always, Rani didn't mince words.

But honestly, I felt exactly the same.

Then, apparently noticing the civilians, the female frontliner shouted something.

She abruptly stopped and turned to face the charging Salamander alone.

It was obvious at a glance that she was attempting something impossible.

“Sphenia, keep it pinned down with magic and arrows. Freynil, be ready to heal. Rani, if anything gets past me, stop it.”

“Understood. «Ice Javelin».”

“Yes, Soushi-sama.”

“Got it!”

The moment I dashed forward, ten icicle spears slammed into the Salamander.

They were clearly far stronger than the other mage's.

The Salamander let out a shriek and its charge faltered.

As I ran, I passed the three fleeing adventurers.

All three looked like teenagers.

They were so desperate to escape that even when I shouted, “Don't come this way!”, they didn't seem to hear me.

Turning my attention back to the Salamander, I saw the lone female adventurer charging in with her naginata.

She managed to land a blow to its head, but was immediately struck by the monster's flaming body slam and sent flying.

The Salamander turned its head toward the fallen woman.

It was clearly about to devour her.

At that instant, an arrow struck its head, freezing it in place for a brief moment.

That single opening was all I needed to reach it.

The gigantic lizard fixed its blazing eyes upon me.

I swung my mace with every ounce of strength I had, bringing it crashing down squarely between its eyes.

E/N:

Woohoo, Salamander saw death even before dying a gruesome one itself!

Anyway, can any of my readers, who haven't read ahead, guess what happens in the next chapter without going to the raws or next chapter? 😂

Stay tuned!
