Konbini Ossan Volume 16 — Epilogue: The Story of a Certain Middle-aged Man | | Chapter 1 — A Grand Happy Ending

Ten years after the catastrophe of the corruption incident caused by the Douki, the great disaster later named the “Douki Incident.”

“Wait up, wait up~!”

Gathered in our garden, playing together, were the goblin children of the Great Forest Autonomous Region, along with a pink-skinned goblin boy.

Yes, him. The one who had once been the Douki.

Despite all that talk about living inside me and what-not, less than a month later he declared, “I’m bored!” manifested himself, and has been living normally like this ever since.

Back then, Arisa had stared in exasperation and quipped, “So you can just come out normally?

In any case, over these past ten years, the boy has completely become a familiar face, doted on by the goblins of the Great Forest Autonomous Region.

Though he himself claimed he was the one looking after the brats.

“Yūichi.”

A voice called out from behind me.

I knew who it was without even turning around.

“Arisa.”

When I answered, Arisa sat down beside me.

“It feels nice.”

“Yeah.”

Though vague, I instinctively understood what she meant and agreed.

With a very peaceful feeling, I watched the goblins playing in the garden.

Right after the end of the Douki Incident.

When Arisa learned that Marceline and Yairo had used the teleportation magic tool to make an emergency escape, she said she felt like her heart had stopped.

Upon returning, without saying a word, she repeatedly thumped my chest, and then cried.

Faced with emotions too complicated for words, all I could do was hold her.

In any case, the Douki’s corruption had ended.

There had been many casualties and losses, but the world had avoided total collapse.

The good news was immediately delivered everywhere, including the Kingdom of Runegard.

With this achievement, Otogi Trading finally gained independence from the Kingdom of Runegard.

Positioning itself as a neutral nation in the Great Forest Autonomous Region, between the Demon King’s Territory and the Kingdom of Runegard, it began efforts to improve relations between the two nations.

Thanks to that, in these past ten years, conflict between the two nations has nearly disappeared.

That said, people’s feelings cannot be changed so easily.

There is no end to humans who resent the people of the Demon King’s Territory, nor to those in the Demon King’s Territory who resent humans.

Conflicts and disputes born from differences in values have not vanished either.

These two powers, once completely divided, will still need much more time before they can truly understand one another and coexist without strife.

A hundred years. Two hundred years.

Or perhaps even longer.

Because it is not something that can be improved overnight, I intend to work on it patiently, without rushing.

For the sake of a tomorrow where the people precious to me can live peacefully.
