Konbini Ossan Volume 14 Chapter 5 — The Disturbance in the Mediterranean
A month had passed since we decided in the meeting what would be communicated to the summoned ones.
Just as we intended, the summoned ones began avoiding excessive leveling, and the Kingdom, too, started fearing the risk of summoned ones degenerating into uncontrollable monsters, so they stopped relying on them so casually.
Because of that, Shuri-kun reported that even summoned ones unrelated to Otogi Trading were being used in direct combat less frequently.
Likewise, the nobles’ shadow conflicts, where they flaunted summoned ones’ military power as leverage, were also beginning to settle down.
As for the summoned ones to whom we had explained the possibility of ascending to godhood and how to avoid it, they seemed to properly understand the risks, and everyone was enjoying peaceful daily lives.
For example, Kanehama had been freed from constantly being dragged around as a Hero to exterminate monsters, and was now apparently shut away in a mansion in the royal capital, receiving education as a member of the nobility.
Though eliminating all combat entirely was impossible, we had succeeded in reducing the risks.
At this point, it was unlikely that a summoned one would suddenly ascend to godhood one day, or that unnecessary killing between summoned ones would break out.
However, a report came in that shattered those peaceful days.
It was information from one of Otogi Trading’s branches operating globally.
Apparently, at some point, vast numbers of monsters no one had ever seen before had suddenly begun appearing, “contaminating” or “corroding” the surrounding regions.
That alone made little sense, but once more detailed reports began arriving, we were finally able to grasp the situation.
First, the location was the Mediterranean.
The monsters in question were apparently appearing where Metidovan, and the Candy Goblins had once lived.
Their appearance resembled small goblins, but their forms were pitch black.
Not merely black-skinned, but entirely black, like the darkness of the night sky itself, pure void.
More importantly, those with appraisal skills investigated the black goblins’ status, and discovered something horrifying.
Both their stats and skills displayed ERROR.
In other words, they had fulfilled the conditions for becoming gods.
Countless such monsters were pouring forth around the Mediterranean.
Worse, the black goblins engulf land and surrounding vegetation in darkness, transforming them into some kind of black substance.
If other monsters or humans were swallowed instead, they too would transform afterward into black goblins.
Local forces were unable to deal with these black goblins, and even now, the territory consumed by darkness continued to expand.
Faced with this terrifying and completely unexpected crisis, Otogi Trading also moved to respond.
We had no idea whether there was any limit to how far the black goblins’ territory could spread.
If we left it alone until they accumulated overwhelming power and became impossible to handle, it would be too late.
Everyone shared the understanding that this was a situation requiring immediate action.
Personally as well, for the sake of protecting my precious family, for the sake of preserving peace in the world they lived in, I could not run from this crisis.
Even if it meant I might end up ascending to godhood.
I had no intention of fighting recklessly, but neither would I ignore a situation only I could handle.
And so, having steeled myself for battle, I began moving to deal with the anomaly in the Mediterranean.
