Konbini Ossan Volume 13 Chapter 6 — Avril and Solitude

★☆★☆

Another World, Day 65

Chisato died.

It was because I let my guard down.

The Demon King, who wasn’t supposed to be on the battlefield, launched a surprise attack to kill me.

Chisato protected me.

We couldn’t defeat the Demon King.

So we had no choice but to run.

The time we needed to escape was bought with Chisato’s life, even after she had suffered a fatal wound.

I’m so frustrated.

Another World, Day 66

Because Chisato died, everyone’s shut themselves away.

The fear that they might be next is overwhelming them.

Recently, Rihito has devoted himself entirely to directing strategy from far away from the battlefield.

Maybe that was the right choice, at least in terms of preserving his life.

Maybe because of that, Kaori and Miyuki also started saying they don’t want to go to the battlefield anymore.

I suppose that’s understandable.

Nobody wants to die.

But I’m the true Hero.

For Chisato, who saved me, I have to keep fighting until the end.

Another World, Day 67

The atmosphere in our party is terrible.

It started because Rihito said it was wrong that I was the only one fighting.

Because it came from Rihito, who hadn’t been directly fighting the Demon King’s Army and had stayed somewhere safe, Kaori and Miyuki got angry.

I think Rihito could have said it better.

But honestly, I was happy he took my side.

Besides, Rihito’s «Appraisal» is special.

Apparently, he can use it even from far away, something close to an ability called clairvoyance.

Thanks to Rihito, we’ve been able to efficiently choose battlefields where we could level up.

It’s not like he was just hiding away doing nothing, so speaking badly of him feels unfair.

Another World, Day 68

It finally turned into a fight.

And it became a truly terrifying conversation too.

It started with Rihito and Miyuki.

Miyuki’s skill doesn’t shine much in rear support.

So Rihto asked whether, at the very least, she could cast magic from a distance and support the front lines with firepower.

Miyuki hated that idea.

“What’s wrong with not going to the front lines because I don’t want to die?” she said.

Apparently, Miyuki was aiming for an art university.

She said she was good at imitating different art styles, and wanted a job where she could make use of that, so she was studying to get into an arts program.

That’s why she wanted to end this war and get back to Earth as soon as possible.

But Rihito said something that completely crushed that hope.

He said maybe we can’t go back at all.

The kingdom summoned us Heroes, but they only did it by borrowing a god’s power.

That means only the gods, not the kingdom, should have the power to send us back.

And the gods have no reason to return us to Earth.

Even if we defeat the Demon King, we might not be able to go home.

That alone would be awful, but Rihito brought up something even worse.

He said the very idea that we were summoned doesn’t make sense.

Apparently, warping our physical bodies intact to another world would require an absurd amount of energy.

There’s no way a kingdom could prepare something like that, and no reason for a god to bother doing it either.

The fact that we were “summoned” is unnatural to begin with.

So Rihito came up with a theory.

Something about a principle called the constancy of the speed of light, or something like that.

(E/N: Constancy of speed of light is fundamental principle in physics stating "Light in a vacuum always travels at the exact speed of c ≈ 299,792,458 m/s regardless of motion of light source or observer.)

Maybe sending information alone to another world wouldn’t be that difficult.

And then Rihito said something horrifying.

That maybe we are fake copies, created only from the data of the “real us” that existed on Earth.

So even if we somehow returned to Earth, the “real us” would already be there.

Meaning we might not even have a place to return to.

When Miyuki heard that, she cried so hard.

Kaori, the other five Heroes, everyone looked devastated.

I don’t really understand any of it.

But there’s one thing I can say.

The fact that Chisato risked her life to save me, that was surely real.

So as the true Hero, I can’t run away.

Another World, Day 72

At last, no one goes to the battlefield anymore.

I’m the only one still fighting.

It can’t be helped.

Even if we fight and win, we might not be able to go home.

We might not even have a home to return to.

It’s fine.

They don’t have to fight.

I’ll borrow everyone’s power, and I’ll fight.

I’ll fight in everyone’s place.
