Konbini Ossan Volume 13 Chapter 5 — Avril’s Journal

Another World, Day 10

If I haven’t miscounted, this is probably day ten.

Out of nowhere, we all got sent into a place called a dungeon.

I ended up in a party with Rihito, Miyuki, Kaori, and Chisato.

The other six Heroes formed another party, and we were made to clear the dungeon separately.

The life-and-death battles with monsters really seem to have stressed everyone out.

It’s been quite a while since we got back, but everyone still looks shaken.

As the true Hero, I’ve got to lead everyone forward!

Oh, right, there was this monster in the dungeon, a wall monster that suddenly collapsed to try and crush people.

It quietly listened to the sounds around it, then toppled over onto anyone who came close.

Isn’t that like the saying,Walls have ears.?

So I thought maybeGeorge and Mary.(-like monsters) were around too, and I asked Rihito.

If there are walls having ears, then where are George and Mary?

I have no idea why, but he laughed at me.

Apparently it’s notGeorge and Mary., butShōji ni Me ari.」.

(E/N: Wondering what in the flying f**k is she yapping?

Basically, y'all must've heard about the saying, "Walls have ears". In Japanese, there's another saying,「障子に目あり」or「Shōji ni Me ari.」or literally "The door screens (Japanese paper-made sliding doors) have eyes".

Now, pronounce the idiom in English. 😂 It sounds similar to George and Mary 🤣! This stupid Go-! Ahem!)

I wonder if there’s some Japanese monster, a yokai with eyes on shoji screens?

I know about the yokai wall that crushes people, though.

Then the knight instructor who overheard our conversation said, “In the Heroes’ world, are monsters like this called Wall Mimiary?”

So I told him that was exactly right.

Apparently it’s just some weak monster without a proper name, so maybe from now on the knights will start calling them Wall Mimiary.

Another World, Day 11

Since we got actual combat experience in the dungeon, it looks like we have to go fight the Demon King’s Army now.

Apparently the current Demon King leading them is said to be the strongest Demon King in history.

A seriously terrifying Demon King who can use multiple spells on the level of cheat skills.

There’s no time to spare, so while heading to the front lines, we’re supposed to level up by defeating wild monsters.

Then level up fighting the Demon King’s Army.

Run away from the Demon King, and just keep slaughtering the Demon King’s Army to gain levels.

That’s our job.

Another World, Day 13

During our journey toward the front lines while hunting monsters, we stopped in a city called Waynesvale.

They were eating something like rotten (fermented) beans, and I thought, “Wait, isn’t this that Japanese food called tofu?”

So I ended up talking to the townspeople.

I talked a lot about Japanese food, and they got really fond of me, so they offered to let me stay at the home of the people who make tofu.

Of course, my four companions stayed too.

And for some reason, Rihito got mad at me.

He said this wasn’t tofu.

Why? It’s food made from rotten beans, so tofu, right?

That’s literally what the kanji says.

After that, Rihto kept grumbling and saying all sorts of things, but it was too complicated and I understood less than half of it.

But I did learn that some food called natto was invented by someone named Kosōkin!

(E/N: Oh my god, bro hell naw… Like I have explained in one of the early volumes, in this world, the food-items similar to tofu and natto were mis-named by a previous hero, it was her…

*sigh* 豆腐 / Tōfu had the kanji for beans and for rotten. Taking the kanjis literally, this bih started calling the natto-like stinky, sticky beans that the locals consumed as Tōfu.

Then there's another previous Hero, Kosōkin who "invented" Nattō but actually (iirc) it tastes and looks like Tōfu. FML! This stupid Go-! Anyway!)

Another World, Day 14

I’m the one who taught them about Japanese food!

But the townspeople kept asking Rihito questions instead! Geez!

About the beans used for tofu, other crops, and the food culture using them.

Rihito talked with them about all sorts of things.

The townspeople said Waynesvale would develop from now on using the knowledge granted by the Heroes.

This is one of those knowledge-cheat things!

I was the one who wanted to do that, but Rihito swooped in and stole it from me!

So frustrating!

Then while I was complaining to Rihito, they gave me the right to name that tofu-like food.

Of course, since it’s rotten beans, I named it Tofu!

(E/N: This stupid n-!)

Another World, Day 24

One of the six Heroes who went ahead, died.

Apparently, contrary to the knights’ expectations, the Demon King appeared.

The one who died sacrificed himself so the other five could escape.

He was kind of an unlikeable punk, very Japanese delinquent type, but still... I didn’t want him to die.

I’m the true Hero.

I don’t want anyone else to die.

★☆★☆

Another World, Day 30

Every day, I fight the Demon King’s Army to level up because I don’t want anyone else to die.

Ever since that one person died, everyone’s movements have clearly gotten worse.

While covering for everyone because it was dangerous, my level ended up becoming the highest.

Come to think of it, I never wrote this because it felt so obvious, but my skill is «Arrange».

It’s an ability that lets me modify and activate skill effects, whether from allies or enemies.

At first, I used it in battle by strengthening my allies’ skills or altering them into more effective forms.

But partway through, I realized something.

Even if I don’t actually possess the original skill, as long as I know about it, I can recreate it with «Arrange».

Of course, I can only activate one effect through «Arrange» at a time, so it’s not like I can stack infinite skills.

But being able to use all kinds of different skills depending on the situation is incredibly powerful.

Rihto’s «Appraisal», Miyuki’s «Illustration», Kaori’s «Item Summoning».

Even Chisato’s «Fist Emperor», I can freely use altered versions of them.

I can even use the «Impregnable» skill that the Hero who died used.

By borrowing everyone’s power, I’ll protect everyone.

Because I’m the true Hero.
