Konbini Ossan Volume 12 — The Failure of the Dragon Village || Chapter 1 — Journey to the Village

Borrowing one of Otogi Company’s long-distance transport vehicles, we headed toward the Dragon Village.

Along the way, I asked Shirley for more detailed information.

“The skill required to converse with the Dragon God is called «Spirit Language». It is said to be a language originally used by beings such as spirits and gods to communicate with us.
Rather than being a spoken language, it conveys meaning itself. No matter what language either side is speaking, what one wishes to convey is transmitted accurately as it is.”

From what I heard, the skills possessed by the people of the Dragon Village seemed quite unusual.

“And the skill I possess is called «Spirit Vision». It allows me to directly utilize the nature of spirits, which exchange information through meaning itself.
It conveys meaning over an even wider range than «Spirit Language», and people near me can also use the same ability as «Spirit Language», with me acting as an intermediary.”

“So in other words, would your skill be a superior version of «Spirit Language», Shirley?”

“It might be. Apparently, it was a skill never seen before even in the Dragon Village. However, I lacked the other skill. So even if it is a superior skill, it didn’t mean much.”

Shirley gave a wry smile, saying that it is useful in daily life, at least.

“The other skill that the people of the Dragon Village possess is called «Mana Absorption». It allows them to absorb the surrounding magical power and store it as their own.
Thanks to this skill, the people of the village are protected from the Dragon God’s magical power, while also accumulating large amounts of magic, enabling them to train extensively in using «Spirit Language».
Since I didn’t have this skill, I couldn’t withstand the Dragon God’s magic. That was the main reason I was exiled from the village.”

“If «Spirit Language» requires that much magical power, wouldn’t it be difficult to use Spirit Eyes as well?”

“Actually, Spirit Eyes uses almost no magical power. It’s closer to an innate bodily trait, I suppose. It activates naturally without burden. I only use a little magic when acting as an intermediary for others.”

The more I listened, the more it felt like Shirley’s skill was indeed a superior version of «Spirit Language».

If she had not been born in the Dragon Village, or if she had possessed a skill to withstand the Dragon God’s overflowing magical power, things might have turned out very differently.

There is no meaning in dwelling on “what ifs”. Still, from an outsider’s perspective, the only thought that comes to mind is that it is a waste.

“Ah, look! Yūichi-san, I can see it!”

Following Shirley’s excited pointing from the passenger seat, I saw a massive mountain range ahead.

The mountain region spreads across the northernmost reaches of the Runegard Kingdom. Somewhere within it lies the Dragon Village.

However, the Dragon God’s magical power naturally instills an aversion in all living beings, making it nearly impossible for anything that has not adapted to the environment to reach it.

To arrive here, one must either be guided by someone who knows the location or possess enough power to resist the Dragon God’s magic.

Fortunately, we had both, so finding the village posed no difficulty.

At the base of the mountains stretched a quiet forest. A portion of it had been cleared, forming a road leading to the village.

It was likely maintained because members of the upper ranks of the Runegard Kingdom occasionally visited.

The path was wide enough for carriages, meaning our transport vehicle could pass through without issue.

“Let’s proceed straight to the village.”

“Yes! When it'll come to negotiating with the villagers, leave it to me!”

Seeing Shirley strike a confident pose, I couldn’t help but smile.

I do not want to make such a wonderful woman, my wife, feel uncomfortable.

Depending on how the negotiations unfold, I may need to step forward myself.

With that quiet resolve, I drove the transport vehicle onward.
