Konbini Ossan Volume 11 Chapter 7 — Shirley’s Past
After ending the call with Shuri-kun and Matsuriya, I gathered my wives and spoke to them.
I told them about the possibility that summoned heroes might evolve like monsters and take on grotesque forms. And about going to meet the Dragon God, the oldest monster who might possess information related to this.
Upon hearing this, everyone wore troubled expressions.
However, among them, Shirley steeled herself, her expression resolute as she spoke.
“Yūichi-san. There’s something I’ve kept quiet about until now.”
“Yes.”
I faced Shirley directly.
“The truth is… I come from the Dragon Village, where the Dragon God is enshrined.”
Everyone was shocked by her words.
Among them, Marceline, in particular, voiced her confusion.
“I have heard that the people of the Dragon Village never leave, as they must continue to inherit skills specialized for communicating with the Dragon God. And yet, Shirley-dono is from that village?”
“Yes, well… I was the greatest failure in the village.”
Shirley lowered her gaze sadly as she continued.
“The people of the Dragon Village are all born with a skill to communicate with the Dragon God, and another skill to protect themselves from the immense magical power that overflows from the Dragon God.
…
But I was born with only the communication skill.”
“I see…”
“Yes. From the time I became aware of things, I was already overwhelmed by the Dragon God’s magical power, unable to live normally.”
Faced with a past of Shirley we could never have imagined, all of us were left speechless.
“Unable to fulfill my duties as a shrine maiden of the village, and with a weak body as well, the elders judged that I could not remain there. And so, I was exiled from the village.
…
After that, many things happened, but I discovered that by applying my skill for communicating with the Dragon God, I could understand the meaning and intent behind complex texts and documents.
…
Using that ability, I began working as a receptionist at the Adventurers’ Guild.”
And that is how we met.
“I see. You’ve had a difficult life.”
“No. Even if I was exiled, thanks to that, I can now live healthily without being overwhelmed by magical power. I think it turned out for the best.”
Then, Shirley raised her face and made a proposal to me.
“More importantly, Yūichi-san. Even someone like me still has ties to the Dragon Village. If you go normally, you’ll likely be turned away at the gate, but if I’m with you, I think they’ll at least hear you out.”
“That… is that really alright?”
It was a welcome offer, but for Shirley, it must be a painful decision.
Even if she bears no resentment, returning to the hometown that once cast her out would surely stir complicated emotions.
“Yes. If it’s necessary for you and the Dragon God to meet, then I want to help as much as I possibly can!”
With determination in her eyes, Shirley spoke.
As much as it pains me, knowing this may put her through something difficult
I cannot deny the resolve of my wife.
“I understand. May I entrust this to you?”
“Yes! Leave it to me, Yūichi-san!”
And so, we decided to leave the guidance to the Dragon Village to Shirley.
