The Dragon God Cavern was said to be a massive cave system intricately intertwined with a dungeon that had grown under the influence of the Dragon God’s overwhelming magical power.
Because of that, shrine maidens who sought to communicate with the Dragon God required enough combat strength to conquer the dungeon.
Furthermore, shrine maidens were chosen based on a comprehensive evaluation of three qualities: communication ability, resistance to magical power, and combat capability.
The one judged most outstanding became the head shrine maiden.
Apparently, only women could fulfill the role because the skill necessary for communication, «Spirit Language», was naturally born stronger in women.
Conversely, men tended to excel in the skill «Mana Absorption».
As a result, women were raised as shrine maidens while men were raised as warriors, and shrine maidens lacking sufficient combat ability or resistance to magical power would travel to speak with the Dragon God accompanied by warrior escorts.
This time, I was heading toward the deepest part of the Dragon God Cavern, where the Dragon God resided, together with Shirley.
In a sense, it mirrored the very structure of a shrine maiden and her escort warrior.
Moreover, Shirley possessed absolutely no resistance to magical power.
If I were not expanding a thin spherical membrane with the skill «Curse Mire» to absorb the Dragon God’s magical power, simply standing here would already be causing her pain.
Naturally, it made me all the more determined.
“This somehow feels nostalgic.”
“Nostalgic?”
“Yes. It feels a little like back when I was still a receptionist at the Adventurers’ Guild.”
When I tilted my head in confusion, Shirley let out a soft laugh before continuing.
“Don’t you remember? That time long ago when some delinquent adventurer almost started harassing me.”
Once she mentioned it, I did vaguely recall such an incident.
It must have happened shortly before Shirley became my dedicated receptionist.
After I had finished delivering medicinal herbs and left the guild, I noticed a suspicious-looking man entering just as I was leaving.
Finding him unsettling, I returned just in case, only to discover Shirley being aggressively hit on.
“Yūichi-san stepped in and subdued him right away.”
“That did happen, didn’t it?”
“At that moment, your back looked incredibly dependable to me.”
As she said that, Shirley gently touched my back as though caressing it.
I see. My position and the way I was protecting her had reminded her of that time.
“Thinking back on it, Yūichi-san has always paid close attention to me, hasn’t he?”
“That time was more or less coincidence.”
“You say that, but I know you’re always watching out for the people around you no matter what!”
Shirley lightly patted my back.
“Yūichi-san, who always treasured me from the very beginning, no matter the time or place. That’s exactly why I fell in love with you.”
As she said that, she wrapped her arms around me from behind.
“Please continue taking care of me from now on as well.”
“Yes. Likewise.”
Feeling Shirley’s warmth against me, I continued onward through the Dragon God Cavern.
“And Shirley, you, who was kind to me even back when I was still just a novice adventurer… That’s exactly why I’ve come to cherish you as well.”
When I answered her in return, Shirley hugged me even more tightly.
