Konbini Ossan Volume 12 Chapter 10 — The Dragon God
After advancing through the Dragon God Cavern for roughly two hours, we finally arrived at its deepest point.
There, at last, I came face to face with the Dragon God.
Its colossal body had been swallowed by stalactites, with nearly its entire form fused together with the cavern itself, save only for its head.
Even that remaining head alone was enormous enough that a creature the size of a human could likely be swallowed whole like a mere snack.
And beyond question, it was powerful.
It likely possessed strength comparable to Vladgaria, the Demon King, or Kēichi, the Hero.
Such overwhelming pressure radiated from it despite the Dragon God merely lying there.
“Yūichi-san.”
Shirley held out her hand toward me.
The moment I took it, Shirley activated the skill «Spirit Vision».
A sensation like a refreshing current of air unlike anything before spread through the entire area.
With this, I was likely now able to communicate directly with the Dragon God as well.
When I looked toward Shirley, she nodded in affirmation.
Then, as though it had been waiting for that exact moment, the Dragon God opened its eyes.
“Child of the village. And summoned one from another world. You have done well to come.”
Those words caused my eyes to widen in surprise.
“You seek knowledge. Ask freely.”
“Then I shall gladly accept your offer.”
Without delay, I asked the question that mattered most.
“Do you know what summoned Heroes truly are, Dragon God-sama?”
“Indeed.”
After that affirmation, the Dragon God continued with a more detailed explanation.
“To explain all things, I must first speak of the origin of this world.”
And thus, the Dragon God began speaking of an unimaginably ancient past.
“Long ago, there was nothing in this world. The gods called this place the Garden of Gods, a land meant for the birth of new gods.”
The term Garden of Gods, one I had never heard before, only heightened my anticipation that the mystery would finally be unraveled.
“The gods summoned creatures from other worlds as beings possessing the potential to ascend into godhood. These became the first monsters.”
“So if monsters continue to evolve, they become gods?”
“Indeed.”
What an unexpected truth.
“The Garden of Gods became a world of monsters. In time, intelligent monsters formed nations, and those nations petitioned the gods to summon creatures necessary for their prosperity. Among the summoned beings were humans.”
So humanity in this world originated as beings summoned by monsters.
“Humans too, through their intelligence, formed nations. At times, like the monsters before them, they petitioned the gods and performed summonings.
…
Among monsters, exceptional individuals ascended into godhood, while the world became filled with weaker monsters and creatures lacking the potential to become gods.”
“So does that mean this world no longer serves as the Garden of Gods?”
“No.”
The Dragon God denied it and continued speaking.
“The world stabilized. Yet humanity desired further progress. As a means of eliminating external threats, they petitioned the gods for the summoning of Heroes. The gods desired the birth of new gods.
…
Their interests aligned, and so the gods answered the summons. They transformed humans from another world into beings possessing the potential to ascend into godhood, and thus they became Heroes.”
I see. So that was the origin of Heroes.
“In other words, Heroes are essentially humanoid monsters whose bodies were transformed to possess the potential to ascend into godhood?”
“Indeed.”
It was the answer I had sought, yet hearing it stated so plainly still came as a shock.
