Konbini Ossan Volume 10 Chapter 18 — Naito’s Reason

After recognizing Kanehama, Naitō’s gaze turned toward me.

“Looks like you brought along some extra old guy too, but whatever. Doesn’t matter.”

With that, Naito stood up.

“Go on, draw your sword, Hero.”

He spoke with a grin, as if provoking him. That expression even looked somewhat amused, as though he had been looking forward to the battle about to unfold.

“Before that, Naito, answer me something.”

“Hah!? What is it?”

“Why did you do all this?”

When Kanehama asked, Naitō snorted.

Then, after a brief pause, he spoke.

“What color does the world look like to you guys?”

At Naitō’s sudden, incomprehensible question, both Kanehama and I fell silent.

It didn’t seem like he expected an answer, as he continued on his own.

“To me, it’s always been gray. Spending my days with a bunch of worthless bastards with nothing exciting going on was unbearable. It always felt like this wasn’t where I belonged.”

Hearing Naitō talk about himself in such an unexpected way, we listened in silence.

“But there were moments when it wasn’t like that. When I was throwing punches in a real fight. Ever since I was a kid, the only time I felt alive was when I was going at it with someone I couldn’t stand.”

In other words, fighting was the only thing that gave Naitō a reason to live.

“But, well, that kind of time doesn’t last forever. Beating up weaklings doesn’t change anything. Without a proper opponent, someone worth going up against, it’s boring as hell. Before coming to this world, I had no enemies left. Those were the worst days.”

Before coming to this world… so that meant-

“That changed the day I got summoned. With the power I got, I can have as many enemies as I want. There’s always someone stronger out there. For me, this place is perfect.”

A world with levels and stats. As Naitō said, there would be no shortage of worthy opponents here.

“So I figured it out. How to have the most fun possible. I even had a hint, you know, Hero. It was you.”

“Me?”

“Yeah. You’re here to fight the Demon King, right? That Demon King guy… he gets to fight the whole world. That’s the best kind of role there is.”

I began to understand, just a little, what Naitō truly wanted.

“I envied that. I wanted to be that too! So I decided, I’d become the enemy of the whole world and fight every last one of you, including you heroes!”

Just as he said, Naitō’s goal was to wage war against the entire world itself.

Only in the midst of conflict did he feel truly alive.

“Draw your sword, Kanehama! Let’s kill each other! I’ve been living for this day!”

Even as Naitō taunted him, Kanehama calmly drew his sword.

“I understand now. You’re beyond saving.”

Then, raising his sword, Kanehama declared-

“If you’ve been sacrificing innocent people for a reason like that… then there’s no way I can forgive you!”

“Hah! That’s what I like to hear! Just what I’d expect from you, perfect student Kanehama-kun!”

At last, the battle begins.
