Konbini Ossan Volume 10 Chapter 17 — The Necessity for Death
“So, Otogi-san, you believe Naitō has to die.”
Kanehama answered with a question. Still, I should respond.
“My personal opinion doesn’t matter. Naitō’s death is unavoidable. After committing something on this scale, he cannot simply be absolved without punishment.”
“Even you can’t protect him, Otogi-san?”
At Kanehama’s hopeful question, I shook my head.
“I can’t. For crimes of this magnitude, the resentment against him would be immense. If I, the chairman of Otogi Trading Company, were to shelter him, then the target of revenge and retaliation would become my employees.
…
I cannot protect him at the cost of putting innocent employees in danger.”
“Then… what if we fake Naitō’s death?”
I rejected that suggestion as well.
“That wouldn’t work either. If Naitō were to acknowledge his crimes, reflect, and live quietly, then it might be possible. But he’s the kind of person who would repeat the same thing again eventually.
…
When that happens, everything would come to light anyway, so there’s no point in faking it. If anything, it would only amplify public resentment even further.”
At those words, Kanehama lowered his gaze.
Even if he was a criminal, Naitō was still a former classmate. Taking his life was not an easy thing to accept.
But soon, Kanehama lifted his head and spoke to me.
“I understand. In that case, I’ll steel myself too. I’ll declare that he should surrender and try to persuade him. And if he still doesn’t show any remorse… then I’ll be the one to cut him down.”
It seemed he had made his resolve.
“Understood. But you won’t bear this alone, Kanehama-kun. I came here prepared to kill Naito as well. We’ll share that burden equally.”
“…Haha. Hearing that does make it a little easier.”
He said so, but he still looked tense, far from at ease.
It worried me, but this wasn’t something that more words could solve.
We would simply proceed to Naitō’s stronghold, most likely the castle, and face him there.
After that, there were no traps whatsoever, and we reached the castle without any trouble.
Following the single presence we could sense, we eventually arrived before the throne room.
“He’s here.”
“Yes.”
When I said it, Kanehama nodded in agreement.
Beyond the doors of the throne room, there was a single presence. And not even attempting to hide it, he was letting out an overwhelming amount of magical power as he waited.
Kanehama stepped forward and opened the doors to the throne room.
And the one waiting beyond was-
“Yo. Been waiting for you, Hero.”
Naito sat upon the throne, speaking as if he had been expecting us all along.
