Soul Devourer Chapter 4 Episode 27 — The Dragon King of the Great Sea and the Mirror Wall

While Jin discussed future strategy with the Chairman at the Hunter Guild headquarters, Yuito was repeatedly repelling Gargouilles' relentless assaults.

After fending off their attacks again and again, he finally arrived at a small island floating alone in the middle of the sea.

Standing on the deck, he activated【Celestial Eye】and surveyed the surroundings.

The only thing visible within his field of vision was that lone island. No other landforms appeared, nor any entrance resembling a path to a boss chamber.

“…Most likely, that island is the stage for the boss battle.”

When the ship reached the sandy shore of the island, it came to a halt.

The sea was unnaturally still. The quiet expanse felt eerie. Only the sound of the tide brushing past his ears disturbed the silence, giving the illusion that time itself had stopped.

Just as unease began to creep in from the lack of anything happening, faint light seemed to pour down from above. Instinctively, he looked up.

Eleven spheres of light descended and sank into the sea, encircling the island.

Seconds later, the ocean’s surface swelled.

With a thunderous roar, pillars of water erupted skyward. From the foam and spray emerged ten Gargouilles, and one massive shadow.

Dragon scales neatly aligned and reflecting sunlight. A long, supple neck swaying. Pitch-black vertical pupils piercing gaze straight at him.

Its appearance radiated the unmistakable presence of a king.

“Water Dragon… So, the elemental counterpart to Fire Dragon, I suppose.”

A low, rumbling roar shook the sea. The pressure of the sovereign made his skin prickle, yet a smile naturally formed on his lips.

“Then let’s start by sending one of those heads back beneath the sea, «RaitousouThunder Javelin» •【Thunder Eclipse】!”

The lightning gathered in his palm darkened instantly, forming a spear wrapped in pale-blue flashes. He aimed at one Gargouille and hurled it with【Throwing】.

The lightning spear tore through the sky, about to pierce the Gargouille’s forehead-! When suddenly, an oval mirror-like object manifested before it.

The instant the spear touched its surface, the mirror rippled like water and reflected the attack at an opposing angle.

“…It reflected it?”

Shock ran through him. Never once had the Gargouilles he fought before used such an ability.

Then there was only one possible source of this phenomenon.

He fixed his gaze on the Water Dragon and activated【Discernment】.

“…There it is. The skill’s name is【Ripple Aegis】. Exactly what it sounds like.”

A most troublesome ability, one that could reflect magic itself.

Yet as he considered this reflection phenomenon, the surrounding Gargouilles moved in unison.

Invoking【Water Magic】, they generated countless water blades, spreading across the sky as if to blot it out.

“Bring it on!【Parallel Casting】• «Hitsurugi-gunFrost Swords»!”

He activated【Ice Magic】nine times at once. A legion of ice blades manifested simultaneously, their clear blue edges glinting coldly in the sea’s light.

In the next instant, the two swarms collided. Ice and water clashed midair, shattering with resounding cracks.

“Well, this was expected.”

The Gargouilles’ side was overwhelmed. The shattered remnants of water blades were pierced through as the ice swords surged straight toward them.

But once again, water mirrors appeared before the Gargouilles’ vital points. The moment the ice blades touched them, their trajectories bent away.

Even so, the defense was not absolute. Dragon scales were scraped, blood seeped from beneath torn flesh, and countless wounds marked their bodies.

Still, as expected of S-rank dungeon monsters, they remained standing without faltering.

Yuito calmly analyzed the situation.

The Water Dragon’s【Ripple Aegis】could reflect magic regardless of its power. Undeniably formidable, yet something felt off about how it had protected the Gargouilles.

Why hadn’t it generated mirrors to reflect all the incoming ice blades?

Perhaps generating those mirrors consumed magic power, or perhaps the skill level imposed a limit.

If that were the case, a battle of endurance would favor him. With his abundant magic reserves, he could simply overpower them.

One more question lingered, was it limited strictly to magic? If it could reflect physical attacks as well, the subjugation might take longer.

While he turned these thoughts over in his mind, the Gargouilles began moving again.

The Water Dragon fixed him with a sharp glare.

Yuito let out a light breath and prepared for their assault.

Once more, the tide of battle surged forward.
