Soul Devourer Chapter 4 Episode 19 — Encounter With the Hunter of the Skies

The next morning.

My various detection skills reacted, sensing someone approaching the room.

I slowly opened my eyes.

* Knock * knock * knock *

A steady knocking echoed, and a familiar voice came from beyond the door.

“Hunter Matsubara, it’s Jin. May I enter?”

“Come in.”

When I replied, the door opened quietly. In that instant, a faint metallic scent of blood drifted through the air.

Jin twitched his nose slightly and narrowed his brows, but quickly composed himself and surveyed the room.

“…Hunter Matsubara. Did something happen last night?”

“I was attacked by a group of assassins dressed in black.”

“A group of assassins… How many?”

“Ten.”

Jin placed a hand on his chin, a crease forming between his brows.

“The security at this facility consists of B to A-Rank individuals. To slip past them and infiltrate… they must have been highly skilled.”

“Before entering the room, they threw in pellets filled with deadly poison. My body felt numb, but I managed to repel them. They were thorough.”

“I am relieved you are unharmed. I will inform the staff about cleaning and changing your room.”

“Thank you.”

After our brief exchange, I took another shower to wash away the lingering scent of blood from last night and prepared for the day.

When I went down to the lobby, Jin promptly handled the room change procedure.

Once that was finished, we headed to the same restaurant where we had dinner the previous night.

Today was another S-Rank dungeon run, so even if the food was heavy, I made sure to eat my fill in the morning.

After finishing the meal, I got into the back seat of Jin’s car and we headed to our destination.

“Then, I’m off.”

“Please be careful.”

(E/N: His fake sympathy grates me greatly 😐)

With Jin’s voice behind me, I stepped through the dungeon entrance.

In the next instant, the scenery changed completely.

A violent gale roared, so fierce it stole my vision and made it difficult even to lift my face.

Squinting, I shielded myself with my arm and surveyed the surroundings.

Towering trees groaned under the strain, branches and leaves whipped about by the storm.

The ground was dry, fine sand and dust spiraling upward and stinging against my skin.

“…Every S-Rank dungeon is a hellish environment, really…”

The complaint slipped from my lips.

Even so, I did not stop moving. As I advanced cautiously-!

Byuuuuun!

A sharp slicing sound cut down from above.

Instinctively, I activated【Wind Magic】, overriding the surrounding tempest and creating a localized pocket of calm air.

The moment I looked up, something descended.

A massive creature, spinning at high speed as it dove, tearing through the air like a drill.

I drew《Sea Dragon’s Naval Aglyphs》and crossed the blades, bracing for impact.

With a thunderous crash, the ground beneath my feet caved in. Shockwaves rippled outward, trees toppling in all directions.

Through the gap between my crossed blades, I saw the enemy’s eyes.

A powerful body like that of a lion, the head and vast wings of an eagle…

It was the hunter of the skies, a Griffon.

Jet-black eyes gleamed with rage and primal instinct. The next instant, its wings beat powerfully.

At the center of the gale it created, I readjusted my grip on my daggers.

Here, the young S-Rank hunter and the hunter of the skies collided.
