Konbini Ossan Volume 9 Chapter 6 — The People of Va
Traversing the Great Forest Autonomous District in the armored vehicle is going quite smoothly.
Because it is a forested area, we cannot go very fast. However, the same would apply even if we were on foot.
Since the Demon King’s Army occasionally passes through here, there are wide animal trails pressed down by constant use.
By following those, we advance through the forest by the shortest and fastest route.
Along the way, we spotted orcs and ogres, but perhaps intimidated by the unusual appearance of the armored vehicle, none of them chased us or attacked.
By the afternoon, just as I began to think we might pass through the Great Forest Autonomous District without incident, we finally ran into the problem I had been concerned about.
Suddenly, monsters leap out from the side of the animal trail, blocking the armored vehicle’s path.
At a glance they appear to be goblins, holding spears and thrusting them forward as they threaten us.
“Oi! Monster, stop!”
One of the goblins shouts in broken speech.
Most goblins found in dungeons lack the intelligence to speak at all, but compared to those, these ones appear to be far more intelligent.
If that is the case, negotiation might be possible. Instead of forcing our way through, I obediently stop.
Once the armored vehicle halts, we all step out and face the goblins.
“Geh!! Humans came out of the monster!?”
It seems they have mistaken the armored vehicle for some kind of monster.
“It’s not a monster. It’s a type of vehicle.”
“Vehicle, what’s that? Don’t say things that make no sense!”
“Do you ride horses? It’s the same idea.”
“Huh? Strange horse…?”
From the conversation, it seems they possess at least enough culture to understand concepts like horses and livestock.
That means conversation might truly be possible.
“My name is Otogi. And everyone here is-”
“I am Ichiro Suzuki of the Demon King’s Army.”
“Otogi Yairo.”
“Tiana.”
“I’m Tio.”
After each of us introduces ourselves, one goblin steps forward from among them. He is clearly the largest of the group.
He stands taller than I do, and his massive build rivals that of an ogre. A remarkably powerful goblin.
“Otogi! You leader, right?”
“Yes, you can think of it that way.”
I am indeed the leader of this group, so the understanding is roughly correct. There is no need to bother correcting minor details.
When I confirm it, the large goblin puffs out his chest and proudly declares his name.
“I am! Chief of the People of Va! Govagova!”
“Govagova-san, is it? Why did you stop us?”
When I ask, the large goblin, Govagova, chief of the People of Va, explains.
“I know Demon King Army. Strong ones. So they can pass here. But you, I don’t know! Weak ones no right pass here!”
In other words, they know the Demon King’s Army is strong, but since they do not know our individual strength, their tribe’s rules forbid letting us pass.
“Then what must we do to pass?”
“Show strength! Chiefs fight each other! Tribe of strong chief allowed to pass!”
I see. In other words, if I fight as the representative and demonstrate strength, everyone will be allowed to pass.
If that’s the case, there’s no helping it.
“Understood. Then-”
“Please wait, Master.”
Just as I step forward, Yairo stops me.
“What is it?”
“May I handle this instead? This is still a place where the rebel army might be watching. It would be better not to reveal your strength if possible.”
“I see.”
Yairo’s reasoning does make sense.
“With my abilities, it is difficult to observe me directly. And even if someone knows about them, they are difficult to counter.
…
Compared to everyone else, I believe I’m the most suitable for this situation.”
“Then Yairo-san, may I leave it to you?”
“Yes! Leave it to me, Master!”
Looking delighted, Yairo steps forward to take my place.
“Govagova! Before you fight my master, you must defeat me first!”
“What!?”
“My master is stronger than I am! If you cannot defeat me, you have no right to challenge him!”
Forcing herself to sound confident, Yairo provokes Govagova.
“Very well! Then I start with you!”
Govagova takes the bait perfectly.
And so, the duel between Yairo and Govagova begins.
