Konbini Ossan Volume 9 Chapter 16 — Immediately After the Escape
When we exited the fortress, Tio and Tiana were already there waiting.
“Looks like we kept you waiting.”
When I say that, the two shake their heads.
“We just got here.”
“And there’s trouble coming too.”
The two point toward the top of the fortress.
What appears there are the homunculi Metidovan previously called reconnaissance types. More than ten, no, countless of them, show themselves.
“You bastards! I will never forgive you, you wretched humans!”
One of the homunculi shouts in Metidovan’s voice, trembling with rage. It seems they’ve come to pursue us.
“Sorry, but we’ll be taking our leave.”
“Don’t you dare mock me, you mere humans! I will not forgive this, I will not forgive you!”
Perhaps because of his anger, Metidovan’s words are somewhat incoherent.
Watching him, I can’t help but feel puzzled. I had heard he was one of the more intelligent figures in the Demon King’s army, yet, now he doesn’t seem like it at all.
From what he says, it seems the mere fact that we are human is enough to drive him mad.
“Why do you hate humans so much?”
I find myself asking that question almost instinctively.
At that, Metidovan erupts in fury.
“Why!? You ask why!? You humans, calling my kin ‘Candy Goblins’, forgetting the sins you committed, and still you dare ask why?! Don’t you dare mock us any further!”
With that, Metidovan launches magic at us. At the same time, the countless homunculi unleash a barrage of attacks.
In this state, there’s no room for conversation, and staying here any longer would be dangerous.
“Everyone, fall back.”
At my command, the three of them nod. Avoiding the rain of magic from the homunculus army, we withdraw from the fortress.
As we retreat, Metidovan’s voice, filled with hatred, echoes behind us.
“I will never forgive you! The history of slaughter against my kin…! I will make you humans pay for it! I swear it!”
After leaving the fortress, we regroup with the diversionary army.
“The operation was a success, Vladgaria.”
I report to her upon rejoining.
“We destroyed all kinds of supplies and facilities. Even if they try to rise up, it should be impossible for the time being.”
“I see. Then we withdraw!”
Vladgaria gives the order to retreat. Following her command, the forces deployed before the fortress begin to fall back.
At the same time, we also begin our retreat, returning to the Demon King’s Castle alongside her.
“By the way, Vladgaria.”
“Yes, what is it?”
“When we engaged Metidovan, I managed to hear a bit from him. He mentioned the term ‘Candy Goblin.’ It seems to be a key factor in his hatred toward humans.”
At my words, Vladgaria’s expression darkens.
“Do you know something about it?”
When I ask, she nods.
“There have long been various rumors about him. One of them is related to that term ‘Candy Goblin’, or rather, that slur.”
Saying that, Vladgaria begins to explain the details.
