Konbini Ossan Volume 9 Chapter 17 — The Tragic Goblin

What I heard from Vladgaria was quite shocking.

First, regarding the term “Candy Goblin”.

It is apparently a word once used to refer to a certain goblin tribe as livestock, treating them as a source of meat. Because of this, it is recognized as a slur among demons and monsters.

As for the tribe referred to by “Candy Goblin”, I had actually heard of them before. They were a goblin tribe said to have lived around a massive salt lake known in this world as the Mediterranean Sea.

They possessed various advanced technologies, including alchemy. However, at some point, rumors spread that their flesh was exceptionally delicious.

Acting on this, a certain kingdom’s ruler ordered their extermination, and they were hunted to extinction.

This story is well known among demonkind as the tragedy of the Mediterranean people.

As for how this relates to Metidovan…

In truth, there had long been rumors that Metidovan was originally an ordinary goblin who lived among the Mediterranean goblins.

Despite being an ordinary goblin, he possessed the technology of the Mediterranean people, and because his body was that of a typical goblin, he alone managed to escape the slaughter.

Then, driven by rage over the death of his kin, Metidovan killed the king responsible.

However, even that did not extinguish his hatred, and he has continued to burn with a desire for revenge against humanity ever since.

Such rumors had existed for a long time.

But no matter how you look at it, the story is far too old. Metidovan, who should be nothing more than a goblin, couldn’t possibly have lived that long.

That’s why it had been regarded as nothing more than gossip, an image fabricated around him.

However, the words I heard from him this time have given that rumor a new sense of credibility.

And in truth, it’s not impossible.

If Metidovan truly possesses the technology of the Mediterranean people, and if what I saw in the underground lab was only a fraction of it…

Then it may not be impossible for an ordinary goblin to live for hundreds of years.

“If that is the case, then the likelihood that Metidovan has truly inherited the technology of the Mediterranean people is high.
Thinking about it, many of his strategies relied on unknown technologies. Considering that, it is more natural to assume he has inherited their knowledge, rather than being merely a genius.”

Vladgaria seems to have reached the same conclusion as I have.

“In that case, he is not fighting out of duty or profit, but from his own convictions, from a desire for revenge.”

“Yes. It would be difficult to neutralize him through persuasion.”

Vladgaria and I nod in agreement.

“In the worst case… no, more likely than not, Metidovan will have to be killed.”

It is the only logical conclusion.

If he were acting out of duty to the Demon King’s army, there might be a chance to avoid conflict through Vladgaria’s persuasion.

If his motivations were based on profit or power, we could offer alternatives.

But actions driven by revenge offer nothing for us to negotiate with. That is why persuading him is nearly impossible.

“I will attempt to persuade him if we encounter him. However, I ask that you do not place too much hope in it.”

“Yes. In the end, that is how it will likely be.”

The Demon King seems to have accepted Metidovan’s fate as well.

As for me, I would prefer to resolve things through persuasion if possible.

But in this case, that may be too much to hope for.

E/N:

Damn, just imagining your family and kin being slaughtered akin to cattle… Metidovan's rage might be justified…

Stay tuned!
