Soul Devourer Chapter 4 Episode 2 — An Extravagant Welcome. What’s the Real Motive?
While I was making preparations and waiting to head to China, the Guildmaster Ogawa called.
“Permission has been granted from the Hunter Guild over there. Be extremely careful,” he said.
“I understand,” I replied, ending the call.
I did one last check to make sure I hadn’t forgotten anything.
Taking the Guildmaster’s warning to heart and tightening my resolve, I left home and headed for Haneda Airport.
After about four hours, I arrived at Shanghai Airport.
Waiting to greet me after I finished immigration procedures was a group of reporters lined up on both sides, furiously firing off camera flashes, and a sharp-eyed man guarded by escorts who appeared to be A to S-Rank level.
As I wondered why I was being given such an extravagant reception, a man who seemed to be the chairman’s secretary hurried over and spoke to me in fluent Japanese.
“Welcome to our country, Hunter Matsubara.”
“Ah, yes.”
Still confused, I gave a curt reply, but the secretary brushed it off with a polite smile and gestured toward the sharp-eyed man approaching us.
“This is the Chairman of the Hunter Guild, Mr. Li Wei. The Chairman has been greatly looking forward to Hunter Matsubara’s visit.”
“Th-Thank you.”
After hearing my response, the secretary leaned close to the chairman’s ear and whispered my words in Chinese.
The chairman then put on a gentle smile and extended his hand.
I extended mine as well, and as we shook hands firmly, flashes went off all at once. Once they settled down, the secretary spoke again.
「For the duration of Hunter Matsubara’s stay, we have prepared a hotel and a vehicle for you.
…
Additionally, this man will accompany you as support staff. He speaks Japanese, so please feel free to request anything.」
(E/N: This was spoken by Li Wei and as I had mentioned way before, conversations in Chinese, including those translated for him as well as not understood by Yuito will be written within 「」brackets with italicised letters.)
I was honestly grateful they had arranged a hotel and a car, but remembering the Guildmaster’s warning, I knew I had to stay on guard at all times.
And even if they were sending support staff out of goodwill, assigning someone at S-rank level was excessive.
On the surface, he would accompany me as support staff, but his real aim was likely to monitor my movements and assess my combat strength.
“Thank you for your consideration.”
I expressed my gratitude for now, though I had no idea what their true intentions were.
「Then we shall take our leave. Please enjoy our country to the fullest. I leave the rest to you, Jin.」
「Understood.」
As the chairman and his secretary departed with their escorts, the support staff member called Jin turned to me.
“Allow me to introduce myself first. My name is Jin. I usually serve as the Chairman’s bodyguard. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
“I’m Yuito Matsubara. Nice to meet you.”
“Then first, I will guide you to the hotel where you will be staying.”
“Please do.”
After that, we got into a car parked outside, and with Jin driving, headed toward the hotel.

E/N:
Wish Yuito had a "Universal Language Translation/Understanding" Skill, that way, he wouldn't have to rely on a "spy" to show him around.
Anyway, what a double-faced bast*rd this Chairman is… Too bad for him, death incarnate has already entered China (fiction)…
Stay tuned!
