Konbini Ossan Volume 7 Chapter 29 — Assignment
There was some commotion, but in the end, I decided to employ Suzuno.
She had many problems, but throwing her away without giving her a chance didn’t sit right with me.
To start, I assigned her to one of the simplest line tasks in the Otsugi Industries factory.
All of the other personnel we had recruited were learning their jobs smoothly at their assigned posts.
I estimated that in half a year, they would grow to the point where they could function adequately as executives.
Unfortunately, Suzuno was completely useless. She was slow even at simple line work, and her mistakes were frequent.
So next, we had her monitor the assembly machines.
As long as materials were supplied, the machines would handle the work automatically.
If a machine stopped due to an error, she would need to respond according to the situation, but the plan was for her to call other staff to handle it.
Gradually, she would learn how to deal with these situations over time… or so we thought.
But that failed as well. Suzuno showed no sign of learning her job at all.
Not only did she fail to remember anything she was taught, she even snuck off somewhere to slack off, reasoning that the machines would run on their own.
Since she clearly couldn’t function without constant supervision, we tried hiring her as a customer service clerk at Otsugi Trading.
Unfortunately, that also ended in failure. She constantly pushed work onto others, and her attitude toward customers was terrible.
In the end, we discovered that she had been taking money from the register and using it to go out and have fun.
At that point, the issue was too serious to ignore. Suzuno was summoned, and I conducted a direct interview with her.
“Suzuno-san. You understand why you’ve been called here, don’t you?”
“Hah? No idea. I don’t get it.”
“I was willing to tolerate you not taking your job seriously. There are others like that. Normally, such people would be fired immediately, but you’re a former high school student from Earth.
…
I was prepared to take the long view and hoped you would grow, even little by little.”
“Then it’s fine, right? Can I go home?”
Looking annoyed by my reprimand, Suzuno demanded to leave. Naturally, I refused.
“No. We’re not finished yet.”
“Then hurry up and talk, asshole. This is a pain.”
“Then I’ll be blunt. Suzuno-san, you stole money from the magic-tool shop’s register and used it for your own entertainment, didn’t you?”
“Huh? I didn’t do that. Got any proof?”
Suzuno said this with a grin. And she was right, there was no clear evidence.
This world doesn’t have surveillance cameras. If someone takes money when no one is looking, identifying the culprit is impossible.
However, precisely because this is such a world, identification isn’t necessary.
“It seems you’re mistaken, so let me clarify. This is not modern Japan. We don’t need irrefutable evidence that anyone can see. I, and Otsugi Trading’s magic-tool shops, have credibility.
…
When we say the register’s cash doesn’t add up, and we believe the cause lies with you… then you are the culprit. Even without proof.”
“Hah?! Don’t screw with me!”
In a burst of anger, Suzuno grabbed me by the collar. But the difference in our stats was far too great. I easily avoided her, grabbed her arm, and restrained her.
“You resort to violence immediately. You try to intimidate others with loud voices. Do you truly believe that will solve anything?”
“Shut up already! Don’t lecture me! It’s a false accusation, right? Take it back, you old bastard!”
“It’s true that there’s no proof. As someone who once lived in modern Japan, I do feel conflicted about throwing you in jail over that.”
“Huh? Then say that from the start, idiot!”
Relieved by my words, Suzuno’s attitude softened.
But unfortunately, it was far too soon for her to feel at ease. The real point was still to come.
“Therefore, there is only one remaining solution. Suzuno-san, you are dismissed from Otsugi Trading.”

E/N:
These are the kind of people that never change, and if you try to give any advice, they turn into karens/kevins. What worthless existence!
My Dear Readers, please don't be like Suzuno!
