Konbini Ossan Volume 7 Chapter 28 — Insult and Anger
After finishing his explanation, Matsuriya bowed his head.
“I’m very sorry, Otsugi-san. I knew she was a problematic person, but I thought it might not be right to dismiss her outright based on my own judgment, so I invited her.”
“No, it’s fine. I was thinking of giving her a chance as well.”
“Hah~? A chance? Who do you think you are, old man?”
Apparently displeased with my words, Suzuno raised her voice irritably.
“That was a poor choice of words. My apologies. In any case, there is no issue with employing you.”
“Oh yeah? So how much money are you gonna pay me?”
“You’ll start with training, so it will be about what a normal new worker would receive.”
“There’s no way I can party on that. No way, no way. Are you screwing with me?”
“If you demonstrate ability, your pay will rise accordingly.”
“Tch, what a pain. Fine, fine.”
As she agreed, Suzuno let out a faintly suspicious smile. I didn’t miss it and added a warning.
“By the way. Naturally, using your skill «Charm Magic» is strictly forbidden.”
“Huh? Don’t mess with me. That makes no sense.”
“Using mind-contamination magic on others is illegal to begin with. You’re no longer part of the privileged class. If you do that, you’ll be arrested and thrown in jail immediately.”
“Shithead. Drop dead, idiot!”
This time, Suzuno’s face twisted with genuine displeasure. Seeing that, Arisa spoke up with a serious expression.
“Hey, Misa. I’m saying this for your own good, but you should work honestly.”
“Huh? Arisa, what are you even talking about?”
“The world isn’t as easy as you think. It’s true you’ll get arrested if you use charm magic, and if you don’t work properly, you won’t survive. You can’t just mess around like before anymore.”
“What’s that supposed to be? That’s hilarious. Arisa, did you get stupid or something?”
Unfortunately, Arisa’s advice didn’t seem to reach Suzuno at all.
On the contrary, she began hurling insults at Arisa.
“Seriously, who do you think you are, telling me what to do?”
“I’m the vice-chairperson of Otsugi Trading, you know. I’m second only to Yuichi, and I carry responsibility to match. At least I can warn you.”
“Huh? What’s that even mean?”
After showing an exasperated look, Suzuno suddenly seemed to realize something.
“Ohhh, I get it now. Okay, got it.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Arisa, you slept with that old guy, didn’t you? You got a cushy position out of it and now you’re getting all full of yourself.”
“Misa. If you keep saying stupid things, I’m going to get angry.”
“Don’t get mad. It’s true, isn’t it?”
“That makes it sound like Arisa got her position through sleeping her way up. That’s not the case.”
At this point, I couldn’t stay silent any longer as Arisa was being insulted so blatantly. I stepped into their argument.
“Arisa worked hard on her own. She studied, she worked, she kept doing things earnestly and seriously, the very things you despise, and proved her ability. That’s why she’s here. She did not become vice-chairperson through underhanded means.”
“Oh yeah?”
Suzuno clearly didn’t believe me, her grin never leaving her face.
“Then how about this, old man. Wanna switch from Arisa to me? I’ve got way more experience, and I’ll definitely feel way better, you know?”
That was the final straw.
Arisa stood up, marched straight in front of Suzuno, and—
Smack!
Delivered a sharp slap that rang through the room.
“Don’t fuck with me.”
Arisa was trembling with anger, the intensity clear even in her voice.
Suzuno stared back at her in disbelief for a moment, then glared at Arisa.
“Tch, what the hell! Don’t get all serious. Like I’d even want to be screwed by some gross old guy.”
“Don’t insult Yūichi.”
“Huh? What, are you seriously into a guy like that? Gross. Your taste sucks.”
Spitting out those words, Suzuno swung back at Arisa.
Unfortunately for her, Arisa’s stats were far superior, and the difference in physical ability was obvious. Arisa easily caught the slap, her arm seized and restrained.
“Damn it.”
“Just stop already. At least apologize.”
“Oh, sure. Fine. I’m sorry, okay? Happy now?!”
It was clearly a perfunctory apology, but Arisa accepted it and released her grip.
Suzuno stormed out of the conference room, making no effort to hide her irritation.
After watching her leave, I hugged Arisa from behind and spoke softly.
“Sorry, Arisa. I put you through that.”
“No. I’m the one who’s sorry for losing my temper.”
“It’s fine. Honestly, thank you for getting angry on my behalf.”
“Yeah. I couldn’t forgive her for insulting you, Yūichi.”
And so, despite the turmoil, after comforting Arisa, the meeting for the day came to an end.
