Konbini Ossan Volume 7 Chapter 26 — Modern Japanese People Are Excellent
“More than starting new businesses. More than building facilities. More than developing products. Training people who can be entrusted with managerial positions is far more difficult and time-consuming.
…
Among the employees of Otsugi Trading, our most capable personnel are already serving as store managers across various regions.
…
If we are to increase the number of subsidiaries any further, we would need to train newcomers who have only just joined until they can be entrusted with managerial roles.”
If that happens, it would likely take far more than one or two years before we could actually establish new subsidiaries.
“That brings us to today’s proposal. I would like to hire all of you as executives of Otsugi Trading, or as employees serving in positions at or above management level.”
“Um, I have a question.”
The one who raised her hand and spoke up was Nishina Yuki.
“We were just ordinary students back in Japan. Even if you suddenly tell us to work, I don’t know if we’ll actually be able to do it.”
“There’s no need to worry about that. Anyone who has had or completed compulsory education in modern Japan will have no trouble functioning as a manager in this world.”
After reassuring her, I went on to explain in more detail.
“First of all, the general level of workers in this world is not very high. There are quite a few people who can’t even perform four-function arithmetic with three-digit numbers. Some can barely read or write.
…
In that environment, all of you who have completed compulsory education and can handle complex arithmetic fall squarely into the category of highly capable workers.”
At that, Nishina nodded, looking convinced.
“And besides, you’re Japanese. Just being able to do exactly what you’re told, honestly and as instructed, already makes you more than competent.
…
Unfortunately, people in this world tend to be rather sloppy. Once you become managers, I think you’ll all have a hard time dealing with that.”
When I added that half-jokingly, I noticed a few wry smiles here and there. They probably had a good idea of what kind of difficulties that would entail.
“Now then, are there any other questions?”
When I asked, no one raised their hand. It seemed they were satisfied for now.
“Very well. From here on, I’ll be assigning appropriate positions to each of you.”
And so, the process of assigning various roles to everyone began.
In particular, I decided to place Kinoshita Tomoe-sensei, who had been their homeroom teacher, in charge of the food business.
Suzuhara Ayumi-sensei, the former school nurse, would oversee medical operations within Otsugi Transport.
Other boys and girls were assigned to various roles as well.
There were also some children who had joined the Kanehama-group whom I didn’t personally recognize, so for them, we discussed things carefully before deciding on their positions.
Unfortunately, Matsuriya could not be assigned any role. With a Sage-class skill holder, it seems the kingdom was unwilling to let him go.
For similar reasons, Kanehama the Hero, Mimori the Saint, and Toudou the Sword Saint could not be recruited either.
After roughly two hours, we finished assigning positions to everyone present and summarizing the details of their recruitment. With that, the main agenda was complete.
“Alright. We’ve now assigned roles to everyone. I think we can call it a day here.”
“Excuse me, Otsugi-san. Could you wait a moment?”
At that point, Matsuriya spoke up.
“There’s actually one more person I’d like to ask you about. She’s late and isn’t here right now.”
“Oh? Late, you say…”
That would mean being two hours late.
Matsuriya looked genuinely apologetic. It seemed this girl was quite a problem child. After all, not being present here at all was already proof of that.
“Understood. We’ll deal with that person another day-”
“Heyyy~! Sorry I’m late~!”
Just as I was about to tell Matsuriya that I agreed, the conference room door suddenly opened, and a light, carefree voice rang out.
Entering with not a shred of remorse was a single girl.
She had flashy blonde hair with pink highlights, gathered into a ponytail, making her stand out immediately.
“Hey, Suzuno! You said you wanted to take part! Why did it take you this long to show up?!”
“Hah~? I mean, I was tired this morning. I couldn’t wake up, so what could I do?”
The unapologetic girl brushed off Matsuriya’s scolding with a half-smile.
Beside me, Arisa, who had been watching the exchange, let out a surprised voice.
“Wait, that’s Misa. Why is she here?”
