Soul Devourer Chapter 1 Episode 71 — A New Title and an Unconventional Weapon
The Fire Dragon’s corpse dissolved into particles and vanished, and the most lavish treasure chest I had ever seen appeared before me.
Just as I reached toward it, excited to see what kind of reward an S-rank dungeon would offer, another notification echoed in my mind.
『You have slain, alone, a dragon — the highest class of monster, a heavenly sovereign. This great feat earns you a title.』
『Title Acquired〘Dragon Slayer〙』
『Additionally, in honor of your solo conquest of the highest-rank dungeon, the effects of the title〘Lone Conqueror〙have been updated』
It had been a while since I last heard a title notification… probably not since I got〘Serial Killer〙.
I could check the details later — for now, the treasure chest took priority.
I opened it at once.
Inside were a large crimson-glowing magic stone, sharp fangs, flexible hide, sturdy bones, and several small vials filled with red liquid.
They were almost certainly all dragon materials. Who knew how valuable they might be.
And beside them, a single longsword lay displayed.
Its blade was as red as blood, the guard, grip, and pommel all dyed pitch-black.
One look was enough to tell it was a high-quality weapon, and I couldn’t wait to see what kind of effects it held.
After stretching once, I stepped onto the magic circle and teleported outside. I hurried to the branch office and pulled the materials and weapon from my magic pouch.
“Please appraise these materials and this weapon.”
The staff member stared at the items laid on the counter, clearly confused. No surprise — they weren’t the familiar Flame Wyvern materials.
He lifted the crimson magic stone with both hands, his expression doubtful. Then—
“Wha— this is a Fire Dragon magic stone…?”
“That’s the dungeon boss’s magic stone.”
“The dungeon boss? You came out of the S-rank dungeon just now, didn’t you?”
“Yes. Which means everything here is from the S-rank dungeon’s boss, along with the weapon that dropped.”
“No way…! You’re solo, and that’s the most difficult dungeon in the country! Even major clans haven’t managed to clear it yet! Are you saying you really did!?”
“I understand the confusion, but it’s the truth. These are the proofs. Please go ahead and appraise the other materials and the weapon.”
“…Right. I was too hasty. My apologies.”
Realizing his mistake, he bowed his head and resumed the appraisal. Once he finished everything, he let out a long breath.
“Phew… I lost my composure there, but foreign S-rank dungeons have been confirmed to contain wyverns of different attributes.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes. And their dungeon bosses are said to be dragons of matching attributes. Considering that, these are indeed materials from a dungeon boss.”
“So, that means…”
“My apologies for earlier. Congratulations on clearing the S-rank dungeon.”
There had never been a confirmed boss before, so his reaction was understandable.
“Thank you.”
“As for the purchase value… I must put it on hold. We’ll need to compare prices with foreign markets and verify your dungeon conquest officially.”
“Understood. I’ll hold onto everything for now.”
“Thank you. Now, about this longsword — its name is《Balmung》. Its first effect is amplification in dragon-slaying.
…
It can cut even extraordinarily tough dragon scales, though only against dragon-type monsters.”
(E/N: Only the effect works against Dragon-type monsters, there's more…)
That was extremely welcome.
In the boss battle, I’d judged that cutting through dragon scales with my short dagger would be difficult and went for the eyes instead.
With this sword, I wouldn’t need to bother with such a hassle.
“The second effect is indestructibility. It cannot be damaged or broken, ever.”
That sounded like something a god might create. For a hunter, though, never needing repairs or replacement was fantastic — a real money saver.
“And the third effect adds +80 to Strength and Dexterity.”
A high boost, but otherwise expected.
“That concludes the appraisal, but… may I ask something?”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t hunt any Flame Wyverns?”
“I did. But I brought the corpses as they were, and this place is too small.”
“I see. Then let’s move locations.”
We relocated, and I took out the wyvern corpses one after another, arranging them as instructed.
Watching me carry them around so casually, the staff looked right about to faint.
Finally, after the appraisal team finished their work, they handed me my payment, and I headed home.
