Soul Devourer Chapter 1 Episode 69 — The Heavenly Sovereign of Flames

I cut my way through the Flame Wyverns that kept attacking me one after another and finally spotted a small entrance at the base of the volcano.

It led to the boss room.

Guided by the torches spaced evenly along the long hallway, I walked until I reached a massive door that radiated a pressure of its own.

There, I decided to take a short break.

On the way to the dungeon, I had stopped at a convenience store and grabbed three tuna-mayo onigiri (E/N: rice balls) and a bottle of green tea.

I ate slowly, let my body rest, and used the time to sharpen my fighting spirit for the upcoming battle.

“All right. Let’s do this.”

I brushed the dust off my backside and stood, facing the enormous door again.

In Japan, all the biggest clans had challenged this dungeon with large parties, they had yet to beat it. It was the dungeon with the highest difficulty, after all.

Anyone who tries to clear it solo is considered a lunatic.

Yet here I was, standing right in front of the boss room.

If I win the fight waiting beyond this door, I would accomplish something no one in history had done.

A true heroic feat.

Something that would close the book on the old era and mark the beginning of a new one.

Excitement thrummed through me as I laid my hand on the door.

The vast chamber resembled the field outside, but the volcano was far more active here.

Ten spheres of light and one noticeably larger one descended from above and flared with blinding brightness.

What appeared before me were ten Flame Wyverns and…

A dragon covered in crimson scales that glowed like molten metal.

Its body was twice the size of a wyvern’s, stretching close to a hundred meters, supported by powerful, flexible hind legs.

White razor-sharp dragon claws extended from its forelimbs, the kind that would slice through expensive high-rank armor like paper and turn even high-ranking hunters and veterans into corpses.

Rows of fangs gleamed inside its massive jaws, scattering sparks with each breath. Its vertical black pupils fixed on me.

A Fire Dragon. Not a subspecies like the wyverns but, a true dragon.

“Heh… that’s what I expect from an S-rank dungeon.”

Even a single Flame Wyvern can force an A-rank upper-class party to struggle.

This Fire Dragon, however, was ten levels higher than them, with nearly every skill at level 9.

A creature at the top of the food chain.

…But I had grown even stronger on the way here. I wasn’t about to lose easily. In fact—

“I’m the one who’ll devour you!”

My shout triggered something in the dragon. It sensed my intent and shifted fully into battle stance.

With a powerful beat of its wings, it lifted into the air and opened its jaws wide.

I drew my short swords, keeping every bit of focus on its movements. The air trembled, and a crackling thunderous vibration pulsed through the chamber.

It reminded me of a certain pirate manga’s Haki…

(E/N: "The One Piece is Real!" ahh dragon)

[GRAAAAAAAAAH!]

Its roar shattered the air, slamming into me with sound sharp enough to tear my eardrums and pressure that made the ground quake.

I braced myself and held my ground. When I glanced down at my own hand, it was trembling slightly.

So this is… the aura of the ruler of the skies…

My stats were far higher than those of an ordinary person, but even I felt my body shake. At least my fighting spirit hadn't buckled.

If anything, the thrill only stoked it further.

I tightened my grip on my blades and charged forward with everything I had.
