Soul Devourer Chapter 1 Episode 41 — Promotion and How to Use the Reward
“The procedures are complete. With this, Matsubara-sama, you are now officially a B-rank hunter, which means you may challenge A-rank dungeons. However, um…”
For some reason, the staff member hesitated.
When I was promoted to D-rank, I’d been warned that C-rank dungeons were significantly harder — but even then, they hadn’t been this hesitant.
“Is something wrong?”
“My apologies. After yesterday’s stampede, we are well aware of your strength. However, judging from your activity record so far… we assume you plan to challenge A-rank dungeons solo as well?”
“I see. So you’d prefer I form a party before going in, right?”
“Yes. A-rank dungeons are classified as upper-level dungeons, just like the higher hunter ranks. The monsters are of far greater quality, and their numbers increase as well.”
“If I recall… the boss of a B-rank dungeon is around Level 40, and an A-rank dungeon boss is around Level 60, right?”
“That’s correct. And even the ordinary monsters inside are stronger than a B-rank dungeon’s boss. So we’d like you to refrain from going alone if possible.”
It made sense. From the Guild’s point of view, they wouldn’t want to lose a hunter capable of handling a stampede alone and bringing back valuable resources.
So what the staff member said was perfectly reasonable… but —
“I appreciate your concern. I’ll try one solo attempt first, then decide after that.”
“…I understand.”
“Well then, if that’s all—”
“Ah, please wait! There’s one more matter to discuss.”
As I turned back, I felt a hand on my shoulder. Looking behind me, it was the Guildmaster — the same man who had stepped in to help me with the reporters earlier.
“Matsubara-kun, could I have a bit of your time?”
I’d refused his meeting request right after the stampede, but with so many eyes on us now, I couldn’t exactly turn him down.
“Just a little, then.”
“Thank you. Please, come with me.”
Following the Guildmaster, I was led into his office. He gestured for me to sit on the reception sofa, and the same staff member from earlier brought in tea.
“Go ahead, help yourself.”
“Thank you.”
After taking a sip to wet my throat, I set the cup down — and the Guildmaster began to speak.
“First of all, I want to thank you for what you did yesterday. Because of you, countless residents and hunters were saved. Truly, thank you.”
With that, he bowed deeply.
“No, I only did what any hunter should. And it wasn’t just me. The other hunters risked their lives to protect everyone.”
“You’re young, yet so composed. Your humility is admirable.”
“Thank you.”
“Now then, I’ve said what I most wanted to. Lastly, for your contribution to ending the stampede, we’ll be awarding you 300 million yen.
…
Of course, that’s separate from the payment for the troll materials.”
¥300,000,000!?
(E/N: Somewhere close to -
> $1,948,167 US dollars
> €1,695,922 Euros
> £1,494,972 Pound Sterling
> ₹172,674,272 Indian Rupees
Sorry, I have way too much time on my hand 😂)
That's an insane amount of money. I couldn’t help but feel excited — I could buy high-grade gear, rare items, maybe even gift my parents a nice trip.
Then, suddenly, I remembered that mother and daughter during the Stampede.
With their home destroyed, nowhere to return to, no warm bath to take, no bed to sleep in and probably struggling just to eat each day…
“Please use that reward amount for rehabilitation of the victims and restoration of the disaster area.”
“…Are you certain?”
“Yes.”
I could earn more than enough once I started tackling A-rank dungeons. I wasn’t exactly short on money anyway.
“Understood. We’ll make sure it’s used well. But if you refuse all reward, it’ll reflect poorly on the Guild. Is there anything else you’d like instead?”
“Then, if I ever run into trouble or have a request in the future, I’d like to ask for your help at that time.”
“Very well. I can’t promise to grant unreasonable demands, but anything else — you have my word as Guildmaster that I’ll help.”
“Thank you very much.”
