Konbini Ossan Volume 5 Chapter 26 — The Saint’s Secret
After carrying Mimori to the infirmary, I took responsibility for watching over her.
Keiichi had duties as a Hero.
And besides, she collapsed the moment I approached her. I couldn’t rule out the possibility that I had triggered it somehow.
So it made sense for me to stay by her side.
Mimori remained unconscious for more than half a day.
Late at night, when the base had gone quiet, she finally woke.
“Huh… where…?”
“You’re awake. How do you feel?”
The moment I asked, Mimori suddenly stiffened as if remembering something. She sat up straight in bed.
“I’m so sorry, Yuuichi-san! I showed you such an undignified sight!”
“Think nothing of it. But… what exactly happened? Is there a chance you were struck by a curse?”
“N-no! That’s not it! This is, um… well…”
She squirmed with embarrassment, struggling to choose her words.
“It’s… my body. A kind of… constitution, I guess.”
“Your constitution?”
“Yes. It’s extremely embarrassing, so… please don’t tell anyone.”
Her expression was so serious that I nodded at once.
“I won’t tell anyone. And you’re certain it wasn’t an enemy attack?”
“Yes. I know exactly why I collapsed.”
She took a breath, then said:
“It was your… body odor, Yuuichi-san.”
“My… body odor?”
The unexpected answer made me repeat it outright.
“It’s a long explanation, but… first, I have the [Saint] skill. It’s actually a bundle of several skills. One of them is «Mercy».
…
That skill softens feelings of disgust toward others. Thanks to it, I can heal even severely injured soldiers without panicking or freezing.”
I had no way to confirm the exact effects of the [Saint] skill, but she was the holder. If she said so, it was true.
“And the thing about «Mercy» is… it doesn’t subtract emotions. It adds them.”
“Adds?”
“For example, if something causes a little disgust, the skill adds a little positive feeling, so the disgust gets balanced out. If something is extremely disgusting, then it adds a lot of positive emotion to counter it.”
“I see. So instead of reducing disgust directly, it overwrites it by generating the opposite emotion.”
“That’s exactly it.”
She nodded and continued.
“And the intensity of that disgust… is measured absolutely.”
“Absolutely?”
“Yes. It’s not based on my feelings. It uses the general public’s sense of disgust as the standard.”
“I understand. That is what you mean by absolute.”
But from the explanation alone, the flaw was obvious.
“And because of this… problems happen. One of which is exactly why I collapsed today.”
As expected. A defect caused by «Mercy».
“No matter what I personally feel, if something is considered extremely unpleasant by society, the skill forces a huge amount of positive emotion on me.
…
So if I happen to strongly like something that society considers disgusting… the positive emotion stacks too far, and I start drowning in overwhelming euphoria. It’s… unbearable.”
“Too much affection becomes harmful. A paradoxical backlash.”
Like a drug overdose… A frightening flaw, indeed.
And then it clicked.
She said she was overwhelmed with euphoria.
She said the cause was my body odor.
That meant —
I looked at her, and she saw that I understood.
Blushing furiously, she confessed her secret.
“U-um… in other words… I’m actually… really into smells.”
There was nothing I could say to that.
