Konbini Ossan Volume 5 Chapter 25 — The Saint Falls

The battle, if it could even be called that, had ended.

Aresvelg was defeated.

There were still several dragons circling in the sky, but with their commander gone, their formation was already collapsing.

One after another, they veered off in random directions and fled.

Once I confirmed it, I judged that the base was now safe. I let out a short breath and turned toward Arisa.

“This seems to be the end of it.”

“Yeah. But seriously, old man. What was that black stuff!?”

Arisa stared at me with wide-eyed disbelief.

“If you mean what it looked like… I suppose those were the skills I use when I’m fighting seriously.”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean? That— that was…”

She dropped her gaze, trembling a little, then suddenly grabbed my shoulders.

“That was insanely cool!”

With sparkles in her eyes, she practically shouted it.

“It was all black and creepy and had that dangerous vibe! Like a stylish villain! Seriously, that was sick! You gotta show that side more often!”

“No, using that on a daily basis would be a little too dangerous.”

“Even that excuse sounds cool, what the hell!”

It seemed my new skills were approved by Arisa’s standards.

And then—

A violent flash exploded across the sky above. The world turned white, and in the next instant, every last dragon dropped dead.

Their corpses began falling toward the base, but some invisible barrier stopped them mid-air, preventing any damage to the facilities.

Before I could grasp what happened, a voice shouted from above. Two silhouettes descended toward us.

“Otsugi-san! Are you alright!?”

It was the hero, Keiichi Kanehama.

He and Saori Mimori floated gently down into the plaza, apparently using some sort of magic.

Judging by what I had seen, Keiichi must have annihilated the dragons in a single strike, and Saori defended the base.

As expected of a Hero and a Saint — utterly extraordinary.

“Yes, I’m unharmed.”

“I thought Aresvelg would have shown up here… Where is he?”

“I already defeated him. Is something wrong?”

“You… defeated him!?”

Now it was Keiji’s turn to look shocked. He clearly hadn’t expected me to be capable of that.

“Yes. Aresvelg was taken care of without issue. If you need confirmation, you can ask any of the soldiers here.”

“N-no, if you say so, then I believe it. I just never imagined you were that strong!”

And just like that, he accepted it.

“I figured you’d be able to buy time against a Four Heavenly King with some strange magic tool. Maybe even win depending on the situation. But taking him down this fast, without a scratch… that I didn’t see coming.”

“I see.”

It made sense.

Even if I was strong, a hero like Keiji would naturally assume he surpassed me.

And the Four Heavenly Kings were threats that even he approached with caution.

“Well, what happened to the other one? The Elder Wraith?”

“Oh, that. He sealed me and Saori inside some dark, warped dimension, then ran off immediately.
Looks like the army of monsters wasn’t for fighting — they were sacrifices to create that dimensional seal.”

“I see, so that’s how it was.”

Meaning, the Demon King’s army planned to trap the hero and saint, then occupy the base, take hostages, and weaken both of them.

Aresvelg did say he wanted the base’s people alive.

But because I was here, they failed to take hostages. In the end, their entire plan collapsed.

“In any case, I’m relieved there were no major casualties.”

“Right. The soldiers who went out for the operation are retreating now. There’ll be some injuries, but I doubt there’ll be any deaths or serious cases.”

“That’s good.”

While talking with Kanehama, I glanced over at Mimori.

For some reason, she had her head drooped, trembling slightly, looking as if she were sick.

“Mimori, are you alright?”

“Yes… I’m… fine.”

Her voice didn’t sound fine at all.
She was forcing the words out while her body shook uncontrollably.

“You don’t look well. Are you truly alright?”

“I… I’m okay. So… um…”

“But there’s a chance you were exposed to some sort of curse. You should rest—”

Just as I stepped toward her—

“Nnh—!”

Mimori suddenly let out a strange cry, rolled her eyes back, and collapsed.

“Saori!”

“Mimori!”

Keiichi and I immediately rushed forward.

She was unconscious, her body twitching violently from some unknown effect.

Judging it dangerous, I quickly lifted her in my arms and carried her to the infirmary.
