Konbini Ossan Volume 4 Chapter 27 — Dungeon Conquest with the Children

From the day I spoke with Isabella, I began to act.

I submitted a request to the Adventurers’ Guild, gathering well-behaved adventurers suited for teaching.

Then, I started combat training for the children. We held sessions in the orphanage’s open yard — the same place they usually played.

Once the kids learned the basics from those adventurers, I led them to the multi-dungeon for level training.

On the lower floors, with adult adventurers supervising and my magic tools supporting them, it was possible to raise levels safely.

I prioritized the younger, less experienced ones, sometimes joining their dives myself.

Each adventurer in charge of training reported to me afterward. I compared their reports with those from Isabella and the children to track progress — and to evaluate the instructors.

So far, there had been no problems.

A month passed since the “Strongest Delivery Service” plan began.

By then, the factory grounds had been cleared and construction was underway.

Most of the magic tool designs were finished too — just a little more, and the factory would be operational.

With things stabilizing, I finally had time to personally focus on the children’s training.

Today’s session was with the original delivery group — six kids, including Joan.

“Let’s do our best, old man!”

“Right. I’m counting on you.”

Joan greeted me with his usual energy, and I answered with a smile.

Then, we entered the dungeon. These six were the most capable of all the children, so today we’d go deeper than before.

The chosen dungeon was a forest-type — tangled roots, poor visibility, and all kinds of monsters. A harsh but fitting environment to build survival instincts.

Anyone who could handle this would easily match a C-rank adventurer in skill — enough to protect themselves on deliveries.

“First, I’ll test your abilities,” I said.

“Ignore me and push as deep as you can safely go. If you can advance and then withdraw without incident, you pass. You’ll be recognized as full-fledged couriers.”

“Got it!” Joan answered eagerly.

The dive began. Joan led the group, charting the path and keeping watch for monsters. He navigated toward areas with fewer threats, choosing routes with good efficiency.

The others followed closely, scanning their surroundings and backing up his decisions. When Joan hesitated, they voiced opinions and adjusted formation together.

Their coordination was impressive — efficient, calm, and disciplined. With this level of teamwork, no bandit or low-tier monster would stand a chance.

They were already the image of the ideal delivery force I had imagined.

Eventually, after struggling slightly against a pack of wolf-type monsters, Joan halted.

“It’s getting risky. Let’s turn back here.”

Everyone agreed. A sound decision — cautious but not cowardly.

I finally spoke.

“Excellent judgment. That’s exactly right. Remember, you’re not adventurers — you’re couriers. Your duty is to transport goods safely and reliably.
Avoiding risk and acting with precision is the highest priority. You’ve done well.”

“Hehe, old man praised us!” Joan laughed, beaming with pride.

The others smiled too, relief showing after the tension.

“Since we’ve come this far,” I continued, “let’s go a bit deeper. I’ll accompany you this time, so let’s face something stronger together.”

“Y-yes, sir!”

They steadied themselves and pressed on. This time, instead of avoiding monsters, we actively sought battle — a controlled test.

Our first opponent appeared soon: an insectoid monster, like a cross between a cicada and a mantis — the Death Insect.

One of the strongest creatures on this floor.

“All right,” I said. “Let’s see how you handle this one.”

The children tensed, gripping their weapons.

The real combat training was about to begin.
