Konbini Ossan Volume 4 Chapter 28 — Joan’s Confession

The battle with the Death Insect was going smoothly in the children’s favor.

Thanks to their cut-resistant robes, its sickle-like arms were nothing more than blunt weapons. Besides, everyone had already learned how to read its movements perfectly.

Their high-frequency blades sliced through the monster’s hard shell with ease. For weapons forged from rare metal alloys, this much resistance was nothing.

Still, the Death Insect was quick. The children couldn’t land a decisive blow; their attacks only tore shallow lines across its carapace, never reaching the organs inside.

They had the upper hand, yes—but victory was still out of reach. What mattered now was how they handled the next phase.

“I’ll go in front!”

With that, Joan leapt forward. The others immediately moved to cover him.

While the five blocked the creature’s attacks, Joan dove into its guard. His high-frequency blade cut upward from the belly to the head.

“Take this!”

His strike split the Death Insect cleanly in two. One down.

But the fight wasn’t over yet. The remaining three Death Insects lunged in.

Holding them off with only five people was nearly impossible—and with one dead, the fourth, which had been lurking behind, now joined the fray.

Trying to finish one off had backfired. The tactic worked against three, but not four.

I couldn’t let the children get hurt. It was time to step in.

I struck first—kicking the fourth Death Insect head-on. My vibration-charged kick tore through its torso and sliced off its arms.

“Ah—O-Ossan!”

Joan’s face turned red, but I had no time to think about why. The disarmed creature was already collapsing.

Next, I used «Iron Blood» to raise a wall of metal, shielding the children. The monsters’ sickles clanged uselessly against it, throwing them off balance.

I flicked my foot, releasing chunks of vibrating metal. They spun through the air like high-frequency blades, cutting the remaining insects in half. Two pieces flew; two monsters fell.

And just like that, the fight ended—not by my hands, but by my feet.

“Whew. That takes care of that.”

“O-Ossan! Th-thanks! If you hadn’t jumped in, we’d have been done for!”

Joan ran up and threw his arms around me, relief and gratitude plain on his face.

“Don’t mention it. With your cut-resistant robes, you probably could’ve handled them even if you took a few hits. I only stepped in to make sure no one got hurt.”

I rested my hand on his head.

“You did well, Joan. Charging in like that took courage. Maybe not the best tactical choice, but your decisiveness wasn’t bad at all.”

“Y-Yeah! If you’re saying that, then I’m glad I tried! Heh!”

Joan smiled, cheeks still flushed. The grin of a child that age really warms the heart.

“I really love you, Ossan.”

“Is that so? Thank you.”

Joan pressed his head against my chest, rubbing like a spoiled cat. It felt nice to be trusted like that.

I smiled and patted his head again—but he suddenly pouted.

“Geez, Ossan. You really don’t get it, do you?”

“Get what? You said you like me, right?”

“Not like that! I mean it seriously! I really love you!”

Oh? Seriously?

“Seriously? And by that you mean…?”

“Th-That means… I… I—!”

His face went crimson as he shouted, voice cracking.

“I love you so much I wanna marry you, Ossan!”

My mind went completely blank.
