Konbini Ossan Volume 4 Chapter 26 — The Old Man Trains the Children
I explained the plan to Isabella. The idea is to train the children and turn them into the strongest delivery service.
Saying it simply makes it sound a bit nonsensical, but in a way it was exactly what needed doing.
This world has poor public order. If you run a delivery business you can’t efficiently hire adventurers as guards every time.
It would be better to build a security company tied to the delivery service itself.
If my delivery company and a guarding force I control can operate together, deliveries can be protected reliably by a trusted force without hiring outsiders each time.
Right now the delivery work is handled by the kids. If I plan to found a guard company later, it’s far easier to train the guards from childhood.
Having the delivery firm and the security firm reach operational readiness around the same time makes planning simpler.
That led to a realization: why set up two separate companies at all?
If the delivery force itself were combat-capable, there’d be no need to create a separate security firm.
The baseline requirement for delivery work is self-defense, so the most rational solution is to make the delivery personnel strong.
There are already cases where adventurers transport valuable goods between cities. Those jobs are entrusted only because the couriers can defend the cargo.
I want to do the same thing on a larger scale, efficiently and systematically. That’s the core of my Strongest Delivery Service plan.
As a test case, I’ll teach the children combat basics and practical know-how.
Then, in a controlled, well-prepared way, they’ll run dungeon sorties to level up while minimizing danger.
In other words, we scale up what I did with Joan and the others — but in a planned, larger operation.
Kids trained this way become the initial members of the delivery force and will later train new recruits.
Ideal, yes, although expecting that full result immediately would be overambitious.
Still, since I’ll entrust deliveries to the children, self-defense is essential. Hiring guards for every run is impractical, so this is the only feasible choice.
I laid this out to Isabella, and she agreed.
“So, for a while I’ll train the kids. If they get stronger they’ll understand weapons better and their curiosity will calm down. Regular dungeon runs will satisfy their appetite for level-ups as well.”
“Understood. But will you personally supervise all the training and dungeon runs?”
“No. I’ll supervise to some extent, but I can’t handle it alone. I’ll subcontract the rest to other adventurers.”
Even troublesome, hands-on tasks like this are accepted by adventurers.
Requests involving education tend to require some moral screening from the guild, so the guild filters applicants based on character and conduct.
I’ll also monitor the adventurers’ behavior myself. So the children’s training should proceed without issue.
Isabella fell silent, thinking it over, and then spoke.
“All right. I’ll leave it to you, Otsugi. I can’t handle this anymore on my own.”
“Don’t worry, Isabella. Nothing like what you fear will happen. I won’t let it.”
She nodded.
“I trust you, Otsugi.”
That trust is something I must live up to — for Isabella, and for the children.
