Seeing my level, Tio-kun let out a voice of shock. The other four froze in surprise as well.
“O-ossan, you’re seriously amazing. Damn, I’ve never even heard of anyone reaching two hundred!”
The first to recover was Joan-kun. His eyes sparkled as he looked up at me with admiration.
“I’ve heard that even S-rank adventurers only just break past a hundred. But Otsugi-oji-san, your level is nearly double that. It’s unbelievable.”
Tiana-chan, still astonished, added some background knowledge.
Thanks to her, Joan-kun seemed even more impressed, gripping my hand and shaking it wildly. He was clearly excited.
“Well, unbelievable or not, I agree. Even at two hundred, having all stats stuck at A is far too low, don’t you think?”
“No, that’s not the part to focus on,” Arisa cut down my honest impression.
“Ossan, how the hell did you even level up like that?”
“I believe I mentioned this before, but I possess a skill that automatically raises my level.”
“Yeah, I figured as much, otherwise there’s no way you’d reach this level. But come on, explain it properly.”
Since Arisa pressed me, I decided to tell them everything honestly. No one could copy it anyway, so there was no harm.
At first, I combined the skills «Pestilence» and «Insomnia» to keep leveling up.
Up to around forty it rose smoothly, but past that, the gains slowed significantly. By the time I crossed a hundred, it had nearly stopped.
Even so, some experience was better than none, so I continued relying on «Pestilence».
Eventually, the moment I had long awaited arrived.
Yes— the skill evolved.
«Pestilence» became the higher-tier skill «Plague». Along with increased experience gain, it granted the ability to inflict disease on specific targets.
The disease-infliction proved incredibly effective. Just as before, I used it on myself to gain experience. By damaging myself through illness, I was able to reap steady gains.
As I leveled up, the experience from others earned by hitting me increased too.
In other words, as long as I kept applying diseases, I could continue leveling efficiently without slowdown.
Of course, I limited the inflicted diseases to a degree that wouldn’t interfere with daily life, so the experience itself wasn’t massive.
My level could rise endlessly in theory, but with the time constraint, I couldn’t push it to some absurd figure.
That’s why, despite my level, my stats remain capped at A— well within human possibility.
If I could, I’d love to climb to a thousand or even two thousand. Unfortunately, reality wasn’t so generous.
After I explained all this, everyone, Arisa included, wore expressions that were equal parts dumbfounded and exasperated.
“Ossan, I didn’t think you were just sleepless— turns out you’ve got a self-harm streak too.”
Arisa’s remark was met with nods from the four children.
“Ossan, making yourself sick just to level up… that’s straight-up perverted.”
Even Joan-kun, who had been looking at me with such respect earlier, rejected me outright.
Strange. From an efficiency standpoint, this method was clearly optimal. With healing magic, the symptoms caused by «Plague» could be suppressed.
Which meant I could run my magic tool shop without issue, all while my level steadily rose.
It should have been the height of rationality — yet here I was, criticized. How frustrating.
Still, it was true I had overlooked something. I should be grateful they pointed it out.
“Thank you very much.”
“Eh, why are you thanking us, Ossan?”
“…He really is a pervert,” Joan-kun muttered under his breath.
