Konbini Ossan Volume 3 Chapter 18 — Gathering Materials and Leveling
Through cooperation with Yuuki, I was now able to investigate palace affairs in more detail.
From what I’d heard, preparations to send the Hero to the front lines had been accelerated.
It seemed the information that a Hero had been summoned had leaked to the Demon King’s army, and as a result, their attacks had intensified.
Most likely, the Demon King’s forces wanted to inflict some damage before the Hero could appear on the battlefield.
That meant I, too, would need to take action.
If the palace was rushing things, then it would be better for me to act ahead of schedule as well.
And if the war was about to escalate, then a wartime boom was inevitable. To maximize profits, developing new products was essential.
Which is why I decided to begin work on a new product.
Of course, that didn’t mean I could start immediately. I lacked the necessary cards in hand.
Until now, I had used every resource and technique available to me for product development.
In other words, without new resources or new techniques, developing something fresh would be difficult.
Of the two, the resource problem was the more serious. The materials a small magic tool shop could procure were limited.
As for techniques, there were still many discarded skills I hadn’t fully tested, as well as unknown fields of magic yet to be studied.
Since I already saw clear potential there, I wasn’t too worried.
So first, I chose to tackle the resource problem.
“Which is why we’ll be diving into a dungeon.”
I gathered the staff and made the announcement.
“Why don’t you just go by yourself?”
Arisa cut me down coldly. But I couldn’t back down here.
“No. You gain experience points by fighting monsters in a dungeon. It’s more efficient to bring along those who want to raise their levels than to go alone.
…
I’ll defeat the monsters, and they’ll get the experience. In other words, I’ll be funneling experience to my companions.”
“I see. In other words, you’re talking about what they call power-leveling, Otsugi-sama.”
Maria, the widow of a former A-rank adventurer, spoke up. As expected of a former adventurer’s wife — she knew her stuff.
“Of course, I’ll make sure there’s no danger. I plan to explore an easy dungeon that I could clear on my own.”
“In that case, please take Tiana-chan and Tio-kun with you. If it’s a low-difficulty dungeon rich in resources, I can even recommend a place I know.”
“Oh, that would be most helpful.”
Maria’s knowledge was invaluable.
“But are you sure it’s alright to bring your children along?”
“Yes. These two have said they want to become adventurers one day. If they can gain experience under Otsugi-sama’s protection, there couldn’t be a better opportunity.”
“I see. Understood. I’ll take responsibility for them.”
And just like that, two companions were decided.
“As for the rest — Arisa-san, you’re coming too. For the reasons we discussed before.”
“Hm? Ah, yeah, got it.”
Arisa would also be joining us.
It was for the purpose of testing the growth potential of her Calculator, through real combat.
We had already discussed this, so there should be no problem.
While we were at it, she’d benefit from power-leveling and learn the basics of adventuring.
Knowing how to defend herself would serve her well in the future.
“Anyone else?”
“Oh! Me, me! I wanna go!”
The one who raised his hand energetically was Joan-kun.
“I’ve always been kind of interested in adventurer work. If you’re the one teaching, old man, then I’m sure the teacher will let me.”
“I see.”
Joan-kun would one day take on the role of field commander, a position of responsibility.
In that case, it would certainly help for him to be stronger and more capable.
“Very well. Permission granted.”
“Alright! Oh, and hey, old man — Rosa said she wanted to hang out with you again. Could I invite her too?”
“Rosa-san?”
Rosa, from the orphanage, whom I’d asked to lead robe-making and study sewing techniques.
Come to think of it, lately we’d only met during work, with little time for anything else.
It might be good to reconnect and strengthen our bond.
“That should be fine, as long as Isabella-san agrees.”
“Got it! Thanks, old man!”
Joan-kun beamed with a wide smile. Seeing him that happy made it worth the effort.
