Soul Devourer Chapter 6 Episode 30 — The Insurance of Decapitation

Vlas's POV

The battle between the coalition force of hardened criminals and dark clans against Yuito Matsubara had been… completely one-sided.

A newly recognized〘Regalia〙he might be, but still a〘Regalia〙.

S-Rank fighters without divine artifacts or Unique Skills couldn't even injure Yuito Matsubara.

That had been factored in from the very beginning.

Which was why I wasn't watching the battle as a whole.

I was focused solely on Yuito Matsubara's movements.

Even if they were merely Ancient-grade weapons, he had received attacks from front-line fighters head-on without a scratch.

That abnormal durability was shocking enough, but…

Using the air itself as a foothold to accelerate and change direction. And that instant movement that is obviously teleportation.

Those two points alone were enough to understand just how abnormal Yuito Matsubara was.

Neither ability existed as an ordinary skill.

The possibilities were either a Unique Skill or a divine artifact.

However, I had never heard of anyone possessing two Unique Skills.

Which made divine artifacts the more likely explanation.

Activating【Appraisal】, I examined Yuito Matsubara's equipment one piece at a time.

There were certainly multiple divine artifacts among them.

But…

“...Nothing.”

There was no divine artifact that granted the ability to stand on air.

Nor was there one capable of instant teleportation.

The only remaining possibility was Unique Skills.

Does he truly possess two of them?

Doubt dominated my thoughts, but there was no point dwelling on it further.

Simply learning that such powers existed was already a worthwhile gain from this operation.

Eventually, the battle shifted to the rear guard.

Using【Debuff Magic】and【Parallel Casting】, he shattered their coordination and began exterminating them just as he had the vanguard.

The result was instantaneous.

The coalition force was annihilated without being able to do anything.

As disposable pawns, they had served their purpose well enough.

But they hadn't managed to force Yuito Matsubara into a difficult fight.

Nor had they revealed much information.

Ideally, I would have liked to continue gathering intelligence.

However, preparing more expendable pieces wasn't wise.

There were plenty of people available.

But sending them in would accomplish nothing except getting them killed.

And…

If Ekaterina-sama were to discover any of this, I could lose not only my position, but my life as well.

It would be best not to leave any further traces.

Returning my attention to reality, I watched Yuito Matsubara.

Without savoring his victory.

Without even looking at the spoils.

He simply remained vigilant, quietly scanning his surroundings.

...He's definitely looking for me.

But as long as I wore the helmet-type divine artifact,《Aïdoneus》, detecting me was impossible.

My safety was assured.

…Then perhaps I'll test him a little.

Depending on the outcome, eliminating him here might not be a bad idea.

Vlas, Second Seat of the〈Semi-Tsar〉, moved silently.

Drawing a Mythical-grade longsword from his《Magic Pouch》, he approached behind Yuito Matsubara.

Then he slashed his blade toward his defenseless neck.

However, the blade only sank about one-third of the way in.

Surprised by that abnormal toughness for a moment, he immediately prepared to apply more force…

At that instant, Yuito Matsubara vanished.

Vlas instantly swept his gaze around.

Behind him, roughly ten meters away.

Holding his heavily bleeding neck, Yuito Matsubara stood there.

The attack had landed.

He should pursue immediately…

The thought had barely crossed his mind when a sharp pain shot through his own neck.

But it vanished an instant later.

Reflexively, he grabbed his throat.

There was no blood.

Yuito Matsubara was still standing right in front of him.

An ambush from an ally? Impossible!

No one should have been capable of detecting him.

During that brief confusion, Yuito Matsubara healed his wound and teleported out of sight.

“...Damn it.”

As he stamped the ground in frustration, something rolled against his foot.

Picking it up, he found a simple wooden doll devoid of expression or decoration.

Vicar Doll》.

A Mythical-grade consumable item.

An item that would take the place of its owner against a single instant-death attack.

It was the insurance Vlas always carried for the worst-case scenario…

Yet the doll had been split cleanly in two, head and torso separated.

As a Divine Artifact, it could not break naturally.

Then why…?

The point where the head and body had been severed matched, with eerie precision, the location where Vlas had attacked Yuito Matsubara.

“...What happened?”

He couldn't suppress his agitation.

This item had been his absolute margin of safety.

Now that it was gone…

“...Retreat.”

Facing Yuito Matsubara without a guaranteed safeguard was far too dangerous.

There was even the possibility that he was still hiding more trump cards.

A similar item, or at least a substitute, would need to be secured as soon as possible.

Abandoning any attempt to pursue Yuito Matsubara, Vlas quietly withdrew from the dungeon.
