Konbini Ossan Volume 16 Chapter 8 — The Douki Panic

“Yūichi-dono! The enemy is closing in one after another!”

It was Vladgaria who raised the warning.

The entire Douki horde had likely reacted to Kanehama’s earlier strike that split the sea.

“We aim to reach the target before the Douki catch up to us! Let’s move!”

I said, but not everyone agreed.

“Leave this to us and go on ahead.”

“Kanehama-kun!?”

Saying that, Kanehama turned his back on the path that had been carved open.

“Well, someone’s gotta play rear guard, right?”

“Hmph. The enemy will likely throw their full force here. Excluding Otogi-dono, it’s most rational for us to remain.”

Then even Tōdō and Matsuriya declared they would stay behind.

“In that case, shall I remain as well?”

Even Vladgaria.

“Wait, everyone! This is far too reckless! The sheer numbers are completely different!”

“Fufu.”

Kanehama smiled and answered my protest.

“If it’s numbers alone, that actually works in our favor. Here, the enemy will line up in a single file and stand in front of us.”

“...!”

Certainly, this was far more efficient than going around defeating scattered Douki one by one.

But these were no mere faceless mobs.

They were formidable enemies with status equivalent to SSSSS.

No matter how strong they were, these were not opponents they could defeat as casually as breathing.

Before long, there was a high chance they would collapse from exhaustion or magical depletion.

And while we were still arguing, the countless Douki became visible, rushing toward us in numbers beyond counting.

“Kanehama-kun!”

“Well, just watch first.”

Saying that, Kanehama raised his sword and leapt high into the air.

“I, my very self, shall become a single blade!”

He wrapped himself in an immense amount of light magic.

The light took the shape of an enormous sword.

UOOOOOOOOOOOH!

Still clad in that gigantic sword of light, Kanehama took a thrusting stance and charged into the Douki horde.

The collision alone did not stop him, he continued his charge, annihilating Douki one after another as he pierced through them.

Then at the end, the giant sword of light exploded, wiping out an even wider area of Douki.

With a single attack, Kanehama slaughtered hundreds of Douki.

And following that, Tōdō also dashed toward the Douki horde.

“Guess I’m up next!”

With that, Tōdō drew his sword.

I had rarely seen him fight, but I knew the nature of his power, the characteristics of the [Sword Saint] skill.

If the Hero skill was one that enhanced every kind of talent, then [Sword Saint] specialized purely in sword combat.

And specifically, it heavily enhanced technique.

Which meant it should not be suited for unleashing large-scale attacks like Kanehama’s.

“Tōdō Style Super Ultimate Secret Sword Art! I call it... ‘Souran’!”

Tōdō declared, swinging his sword in an arc like a baseball bat.

A wave of fighting spirit overflowed from the blade, becoming a flying slash that swept horizontally across a vast area and struck the Douki.

Even when it hit, the flying slash did not immediately bisect the Douki.

Instead, it kept moving forward, dragging countless Douki along with it.

After traveling a certain distance, it rose skyward, carrying the gathered Douki high above before slicing them apart all at once.

At the same time, it exploded, reducing everything to dust.

“Hmph. It’s been a while since I’ve gone all out too.”

Next, Matsuriya stepped forward.

Manifest, crystal of flame!

As he spoke, Matsuriya began gathering fire-aspect magical power before him.

This was an ultimate technique Matsuriya had developed through his own independent research.

Using his own magical power as a catalyst, it summoned “something” that governed each elemental attribute.

Originally, while devouring research papers on dungeons, he had become interested in the concept of artificially recreating a dungeon.

As his research progressed, artificial dungeons proved impossible.

But in their place, he discovered something else.

That was this magic.

Commonly known as «Spirit Crystal».

If dungeons were monsters, then some kind of will must exist within them.

The crystals of elemental magic created during his attempts to recreate that will came to house the will of some “other” existence, distinct from dungeons.

It manifested power very similar to the magic known as spirit magic, which was passed down among certain races such as elves.

Thus, Spirit Crystal.

Its effect was simple.

An elemental crystal was offered to the summoned “something”, and in return, that inhuman existence would unleash powerful magic impossible for humans to achieve.

O will of scorching heat and hellfire, come forth! ‘Freylia’!

He called out, and at the end, Matsuriya spoke the name of that “something”.

Then Freylia, that “something”, understood Matsuriya’s will and, through an exchange of thought beyond words, precisely activated the desired spell.

Before the approaching Douki, something like a giant made of flame manifested.

The next instant, the giant swung its arm, scattering scorching flames.

Strangely, despite the sheer heat, the earth itself was left unharmed.

Only the Douki melted away, evaporating and vanishing.

“I’ll keep going! ‘Sylphylia’, ‘Terralia’, ‘Voltiria’, ‘Blizzaria’!”

Matsuriya generated Spirit Crystals one after another.

All five elemental crystals corresponding to his attributes floated into the air.

Then, in addition to Freylia, four more giants manifested across the battlefield.

Giants bearing the attributes of wind, earth, lightning, and ice.

Unleash the ultimate storm, the solemn radiance, the purifying thunder, the silent judgment!

The four giants responded to Matsuriya’s words.

A storm of wind blades, earth writhing like serpents, pillar-like lightning, and raging cold swallowed countless Douki, annihilating them.

In terms of sheer extermination power, it unquestionably surpassed Kanehama and Tōdō by an overwhelming margin.
