Konbini Ossan Volume 10 Chapter 15 — The Capital of the Barometz Duchy
Having broken through the final defensive line, the capital of the Barometz Duchy finally came into view.
And only at this stage did we notice something was wrong.
“There’s… no one in the capital?”
Using not only binoculars but also various observation devices brought by the defense unit, I came to that conclusion after surveying the capital.
We had expected that a considerable number of people, including civilians, would still remain within the capital.
However, there was not a single human figure inside. Moreover, the instruments used to measure magical pressure and mana density showed no readings whatsoever.
In other words, there were no human-sized living beings anywhere within the capital.
It was unthinkable that concealment powerful enough to deceive Otogi Trading Company’s equipment had been cast over the entire city.
These were technologies capable of seeing through even a Demon King’s concealment, so neither Naito nor the Barometz Duchy could possibly achieve such a thing.
Which left only one possibility.
“Naito must have driven the capital’s residents out for some reason.”
I stated this conclusion during a strategy meeting where everyone had gathered to discuss the situation.
“It’s definitely a trap.”
Marceline declared with a grim expression.
“However, judging from Naitō’s personality, I don’t think he would use something that roundabout. Up until now, the enemy forces have simply been thrown at us one after another.”
Kanehama offered his thoughts based on his understanding of Naitō’s character.
“Still, judging from the strength of his skill, he must possess extremely high stats. If we send in half-baked forces, they will undoubtedly suffer casualties.”
Metidovan assessed the likely outcome if we sent our forces into the capital.
“In that case, even if it’s a trap, it would be best to send in a small elite unit first.”
Taking everyone’s opinions into account, I arrived at that conclusion.
“If anyone’s going, it should be Otogin and Kanakana. Based on the skill’s effects, Naitō’s mana alone should be at least equivalent to SSS+ rank.
…
And if his other stats are on the same level, only someone with all stats reaching SSSS could handle traps or ambushes.”
(E/N: I believe I've been wrong in reading “Kanehama's” name. Will rectify from next chapter…)
Shuri-kun analyzed Naitō’s abilities based on prior data and narrowed down who would be suitable to go ahead.
“I see. If we want a sufficient safety margin, then Shuri-kun is right.”
Nodding, I turned to Kanehama.
“Kanehama, do you have any objections to this plan?”
“No, of course not. If it reduces the risk to everyone else, I have no problem going ahead. And with you coming along too, Otogi-san, our combat strength is more than enough.”
Kanehama agreed.
With that, it was decided. The two of us would advance ahead, confirm the presence of any traps, and proceed to capture and neutralize Naitō.
In the end, it came down to a clash between individuals of overwhelming power. Given the existence of status values, it couldn’t be helped.
“Then everyone, I leave command and defense of the unit to you. Kanehama-kun and I will proceed to suppress Naito.”
And so, the final battle in the Barometz Duchy began.
