Soul Devourer Chapter 4 Episode 24 — The Azure-scaled Sea Dragon
Having finished the fierce battle against the Heavenly Hunter King in the third S-rank dungeon, I leaned back into the rear seat, faint fatigue lingering throughout my body.
The next destination was the fourth S-rank dungeon.
As I absentmindedly watched the scenery pass by outside the window, Jin’s voice reached me through my headphones, and I stopped the music.
“We’ve arrived, Hunter Matsubara.”
Removing the headphones, I looked past the windshield and saw a plaza ahead. Perhaps because it was nearing midday, there were few people around.
Usually, it would be bustling with hunters coming and going, yet the plaza now lay silent.
At this rate, there probably won’t be any concern about an ambush.
As that thought crossed my mind, Jin opened the rear door.
“Thank you. I’ll be off.”
I stepped out of the car and was about to head toward the dungeon when I was called from behind.
“Please wait, Hunter Matsubara.”
I stopped and turned around.
“Is something wrong?”
“I just received a call from the Chairman. I’ll be heading to him now. However, please rest assured… a replacement is already on the way.”
“I understand. Will that person be acting as the support staff from now on?”
“No, only temporarily. Once my business is concluded, I will resume my duties.”
“Understood. I’ll be going, then.”
With a light nod, I left the car, crossed the deserted plaza, and approached the towering dungeon entrance before me.
Passing through the pitch-black oval entrance, my vision darkened, and the scenery changed entirely.
Before me stretched an ocean that extended to the horizon. At my feet lay a pristine sandy beach, and the sea breeze brushed against my cheeks.
Looking around, I saw various ships lined up along the shore, large and small alike. All appeared to be in good condition, as though they had been used until recently.
“These ships… who do they belong to? Are they a dungeon-prepared ‘gimmick,’ or did hunters bring them?”
Scanning the area, I saw no one. None of my detection skills reacted. It seemed I was alone here.
Just to be sure, I ran to a nearby ship and called out, but there was no response.
I leapt aboard and took a quick look inside. There were no signs of human presence.
“…Alright. This basically means ‘use it,’ doesn’t it?”
Normally, using someone else’s property without permission would be forbidden, but this was an exception. Even if it did belong to someone, I could pay a usage fee afterward.
Convincing myself of that, I reached for the magic stone embedded in the steering wheel. The moment my fingertips touched it, I felt something being drawn out.
Startled, I opened my status window. My magic power had decreased slightly.
“So it runs on magic power.”
Right then, without any input from me, the ship slowly began to move forward. At a gentle pace, it set out onto the sea.
“Somehow, I feel like the protagonist of a certain pirate manga.”
(E/N: THE TWO PIECE IS REAL!!! 🤣🤣)
The moment I muttered that, a massive shadow shifted across the surface of the distant sea. All of my detection skills reacted… it was heading straight for me.
The next instant, with a thunderous roar, the sea split open. From a waterfall of spray, it emerged.
A long, supple neck. Beautifully aligned azure scales. And dark blue eyes like the abyss of the deep sea, piercing straight at me.
“…Gargouille, huh.”
(E/N: Basically Gargoyle but French, just google 'Gargouille', it's quite interesting!)
【Discernment】revealed its status and possessed skills. Fortunately, it had skills I did not yet possess.
“Nice. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of fight you’ll put up.”
From《Magic Pouch》, I drew《Balmung》, a weapon effective against dragon-kind, and readied it.
At that very moment, Gargouille roared.
