Konbini Ossan Volume 8 Chapter 15 — The Third Checkpoint
Leading the members of the Demon King’s entourage who have cleared the second gate, I head toward the third gate.
“Still, Otogi-dono. The magic tools you use are quite peculiar, yet fascinating.”
“They are magic tools created by gathering the very essence of Otogi Trading’s technology.
…
The magitech sabers and anti-magic barriers the two used at the second gate are mass-produced models, which we equip to those of commander class.”
“Oh? Then your army’s commanders possess strength at that level?”
“Those two are exceptional. It would be more accurate to assume that others are two or three tiers below them.”
As we walk, I converse with Vladgaria about magic tools and the military strength of Otogi Trading.
Satira glares at me with dissatisfaction, but perhaps because she was able to overwhelm the second gate, she seems to be in a good mood and does not voice any complaints.
Meanwhile, Leonis wears a sullen expression, making it impossible to read what he is thinking. At the very least, he appears bored.
The angels who were supposed to be elite soldiers trail behind us, their faces pale and tense.
Even with the contract forbidding killing in place, this is the heart of enemy territory, filled with individuals powerful enough to kill them with ease.
Their reaction is only natural.
Before long, we arrive at the third gate.
Waiting at the third gate is one of my wives.
“Thank you for waiting, Joan-san.”
“Nope, it's fine.”
Joan stands ready, brimming with fighting spirit, holding a crimson greatsword.
“Now then, allow me to introduce her to the members of the Demon King’s entourage. This is Joan-san, who oversees the third gate. She is also one of my wives.”
As I turn back and introduce Joan to the Demon King’s entourage, Vladgaria tilts her head and asks a question.
“Hm… If you say wife, then she is a woman, yes? Then why does that one bear a name akin a man’s?”
“There… are various circumstances.”
“Hm, I see. No, that was an irrelevant question.”
Vladgaria likely assumes that Joan is a woman who, for some reason, was given a man’s name.
In reality, it is the reverse:
Joan-kun, who had been male due to certain circumstances, became Joan-san.
(E/N: The nuance here is that, generally -kun suffix is used for young boys, while, -san prefix is preferred to address young females. Please keep in mind that, this addressing system is complicated as hell.
If the addressee is an adult, over 20-years old, and addresser is older, -kun can be used for either gender by either gender.
If addressee and addresser are equal in age, -san is generally used, formally.
Then there's the factor of closeness between the addressee and addresser and the story goes on… Thus, except for conversations, I edit out the suffixes. Sorry for the yap! Orz!)
“More importantly, is it truly fine for this gate to be handled by a single person?”
The one who asks this next is Satira, looking brimming with confidence. Having broken through Tiana and Tio, she must be in high spirits.
“There is no problem. She is among the most powerful within Otogi Trading. She oversees the security division, and in military terms, she would be positioned like a general or commander-in-chief.”
Incidentally, Tio and Tiana oversee the adventurers contracted with Otogi Trading. In terms of ability, it would take both of them together just to fight Joan on even footing.
Furthermore, this time I have provided Joan with a special magic sword manufactured exclusively by Otogi Trading.
It is impossible to know who would win between her and Satira at full strength, but there is no chance she would lose easily.
“Hmph. In any case, I’ll finish this instantly as well.”
Saying that, Satira removes her ring. At once, dark magical power envelops her wings, transforming them into black wings.
Seeing Satira like that, Joan must have realized preparations are complete. She flashes a fierce, combative grin and raises her crimson magic sword.
“Alright then, let’s have a good fight!”
“That is iff you’re capable of it.”
Even in the face of Satira’s provocative attitude, Joan appears completely unfazed. She is likely fully focused on the battle about to unfold.
“Then, the third gate… Begin!”
With my declaration, the battle between the two finally commences.
