Konbini Ossan Volume 8 Chapter 10 — Regret
The five members of Brave Wings slump their shoulders in disappointment.
“Ahh, we lost.”
“I never thought she’d be this strong.”
Nishina and Mayama exchange words with regretful expressions.
“Come on, you two. Recovery comes before reflection.”
And with that, Suzuhara-sensei immediately switches gears and begins healing the damage they took using «Complete Recovery».
“I’m sorry. I managed to get close, but…”
Still slumped, Kinoshita-sensei returns to the other four.
“No, Tomo-chan-sensei isn’t at fault. I couldn’t do anything at all.”
Suzuno follows up, speaking bitterly as she tries to console Kinoshita-sensei.
I approach the five of them and offer words of encouragement.
“There’s no need to be discouraged. From the start, we knew that facing an enemy of executive class on their side would be difficult in terms of combat strength.
…
Rather, you overwhelmingly dominated the Demon King Army’s elite soldiers. That’s an excellent result.”
“Y-You think so? Ehehe, thanks, President (Kaichō).”
Suzuno smiles shyly. I can’t help but admire how completely she has reformed, bearing no resemblance to the delinquent she once was.
“Now then. Since all five of you showed such a splendid fight, I will of course grant you the promised rewards.”
“Yesss!”
The one who shouted with joy while striking a fist pump was Mayama. Nishina, meanwhile, made a small fist pump in quieter delight.
For the record, while Mayama’s reward is a new gun, Nishina’s is a pair of tickets for a hot spring trip. Apparently, she plans to invite Mimori.
On the other hand, Suzuhara-sensei and Kinoshita-sensei look uneasy.
“Um, is it really all right?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Now that I think about it, I feel like I made a rather bold request.”
The requests from these two were increases to the bonus-like budgets allocated to the departments they each oversee at Otogi Trading.
The amounts requested were quite substantial, but if it’s these two, they should put the funds to good use, so there shouldn’t be any problem.
“If anything, we’re the ones who feel sorry that it wasn’t a personal request.”

“Is that so? Then I’ll accept it without holding back.”
When I speak honestly, Suzuhara-sensei replies with visible relief. Kinoshita-sensei looks similarly reassured.
The rewards for four people are now settled. However, the reward for the last one, Suzuno, has yet to be decided.
“Then, Suzuno-san. What would you like as your reward?”
“Um, then, President, uh… um…”
Fidgeting, Suzuno voices her wish.
“I want you to pat my head. Like, tell me I did a good job.”

“I see. Is that all you want?”
“Yeah!”
That’s an easy enough request. I place my hand on Suzuno’s head and gently pat her as I speak.
“You did a wonderful job, Suzuno-san. You were excellent.”
“Y-Yeah!”
“I know how much effort it took for you to become who you are now. Taking that into account, I truly believe your hard work is something precious.”
“Um…”
“You really did do a great job.”
“Yeah. Thanks, President…”
Suzuno smiles with tears in her eyes.
I continue patting her head for a while, but eventually she says that this is enough and pulls away.
With that, the rewards for all five have been safely decided.
Now then. Let us return to today’s main matter.
I leave the five members of Brave Wings and approach Vladgaria and the others.
“Congratulations. You’ve safely cleared the first gate.”
“Mm. My subordinates are strong indeed. Satira, you did well.”
“I am honored to have satisfied you, Demon King.”
The two of them look satisfied, but regrettably, it’s time to state the facts plainly.
“This first gate represents the highest-class combat power among the regular soldiers under the ownership of our Otogi Trading.
…
As expected of one of the Demon King’s close aides. Regular soldiers would not be enough to face you.”
“Oh? Regular soldiers, you say?”
Vladgaria’s gaze sharpens.
In truth, since Brave Wings are summoned heroes, their potential is high, but they are not a group that lives in constant battle.
As such, they are roughly on par with the employees belonging to Otogi Trading’s security division, who train regularly and have been thoroughly honed.
With their cheat skills, Brave Wings do have the advantage. Even so, a regular employee of the security division would still put up a good fight.
“Tch, don’t get cocky! Guide us to the next gate!”
Perhaps embarrassed at having acted boastful against mere regular soldiers, Satira raises her voice in anger, her face flushed red.
“Yes, of course. Then let us proceed to the second gate.”
“Fufu~, this is starting to look quite enjoyable.”
Vladgaria alone laughs with delight.
Leading the members of the Demon King’s army, I begin walking toward the next room, the second gate.
