Soul Devourer Chapter 3 Episode 9 — A Match Using the Opponent’s Specialty
The Almighty Snowman forgot it was facing me and devoted itself entirely to devouring the magic stones I had tossed before it.
I quietly observed as it ate all ten magic stones. Once it finished, the Almighty Snowman gradually began to change its very existence.
Its height, which had been around three meters, shrank even further, and its previously hulking, muscular body transformed into a lean, finely honed physique.
Though it had grown smaller, it still stood around two meters tall, but its form had become far closer to human than even the Empress Ant.
Naturally, its ability values and skill levels also increased, mutating and strengthening to the level of a Fire Dragon, an S-rank monster.
With the second verification also a success, it was clear that feeding magic stones was a reliable method to forcibly mutate and strengthen a boss.
That said, this method requires extreme caution.
If one has the strength to defeat an S-rank monster, there’s no issue but, if the attempt fails, it wouldn’t just endanger the hunter.
It could trigger a stampede and cause massive damage to cities and civilians.
Honestly, compared to such a crooked method, challenging an S-rank dungeon normally is far more reliable.
Even as these thoughts flashed through my mind over a few brief moments, the mutated monster; the Almighty Snow King, and I continued to glare sharply at each other, sizing one another up.
Then, that stalemate suddenly came to an end.
The Almighty Snow King activated【Sovereign Aura】, and an overwhelming pressure strong enough to make the air creak slammed into my body.
I responded in kind by activating my own【Sovereign Aura】, canceling out the Snow King’s pressure.
Seeing that I showed no sign of flinching, the Almighty Snow King suddenly created an ice wall directly beside itself… then shattered it with a punch.
I was momentarily stunned by this bizarre action of destroying a wall meant for defense, when the Snow King calmly picked up chunks of ice, raised them high, and drew back.
Only then did I understand its intent.
As the ice chunks came hurtling toward me at high speed with a sharp cutting sound, I swung《Balmung》and shattered them.
After throwing several more ice chunks with【Throwing】, the Almighty Snow King realized the attack was pointless and shifted to its next move.
It formed a massive ice spear in its hand, wound up, and hurled it with【Throwing】.
Even that incredibly durable ice spear was easily split apart by《Balmung》. But it seemed the Snow King’s true attack came after that.
Aiming for the brief moment of stiffness right after I swung《Balmung》, the Almighty Snow King closed the distance and sharply drove its fist toward my face.
However, its punch cut through empty air… I had already pulled away using【Warp】.
Even as a monster, the Almighty Snow King wore a look of sheer shock.
“Your aim wasn’t bad. Still, I’ve been relying too much on ambush tactics with【Stealth】lately. From now on, I’ll fight using my opponent’s specialty and build my adaptability and fundamentals.”
Of course, this wouldn’t apply in emergencies like stampedes.
I stored《Balmung》in my《Magic Pouch》, loosened my wrists and ankles, and gave a light jump in place as warm-up.
“Let’s go.”
♦︎♢♦︎♢♦︎♢♦︎♢♦︎♢
The Almighty Snow King excelled in【Ice Magic】and【Martial Arts】. So I decided to limit myself to【Ice Magic】and【Martial Arts】as well.
First, close-quarters combat. We closed in and exchanged punches and kicks.
As the Snow King threw a right straight, I answered with my own right straight.
Overpowered by the difference in ability values, the Snow King lost the exchange.
It opened the fist we had collided with, grabbed my hand, seized me with its left hand as well, pulled its left leg back, and tried to drive a knee into my left side.
I raised my right leg in a split-second decision to block the knee strike, but while my attention was diverted, it swung the hand gripping my fist upward and aimed a sweeping blow at the right side of my head.
I ducked under the sweep and used the motion to flip backward, blasting the Almighty Snow King away behind me.
With distance opened between us, we both closed in again.
The Snow King had higher skill levels, but my ability values were higher. That meant the damage would inevitably accumulate on its side.
If our overall strength were equal, its superior technique might have given it the edge but, with a gap in ability values, the story changed.
The Snow King’s punches and kicks caused me minor pain. My punches and kicks, however, inflicted pain it couldn’t ignore.
Judging that it couldn’t win in close combat, the Almighty Snow King forcibly created distance and cast【Ice Magic】.
Ice walls suddenly formed around me, and ice doors attached to the walls on either side slammed shut, trapping me inside an ice coffin.
However, with my high Spirit value and【Ice Magic Resistance】, I forcibly broke free and returned the favor with a wide-area annihilation spell of【Ice Magic】.
“«Absolute Zero»”
(E/N: I am Atomic ahh spell or more like Niflheim ahh spell 🤣!)
The instant I cast the spell, the entire field plunged into an absolute-zero state where all things froze beneath my Intelligence value.
The Almighty Snow King, too, froze solid, its entire body glittering with ice crystals, locked in place as if time itself had stopped.
I slowly walked through the frozen paradise toward the Snow King — then mercilessly shattered the ice statue with a spinning kick.
