Soul Devourer Chapter 3 Episode 24 — Confusion Caused by The Two's Unusual Attacks

The first to attack was not the large man I had briefly fought earlier, but a slender man with a longsword hanging at his waist.

He drew the longsword and swiftly closed the distance, swinging it down in a sharp diagonal slash. I caught the blade with《Balmung》, and at that moment the large man closed in from the side.

I tried to deal with the large man’s attack, but the slender man poured strength into his longsword and pressed in.

However, my Strength stat was higher, and he couldn’t overpower me completely. Instead, I pushed back from my side.

When the slender man braced himself and we entered a momentary stalemate, I suddenly relaxed my strength, forcing him into a forward-leaning posture, and slammed a kick into his unguarded flank, sending him flying.

I immediately turned my gaze back to the large man and met his thrusting fist with《Balmung》.

But the large man quickly pulled his fist back, rotated his body, and tried to smash the back of his fist into my right cheek.

However, his backfist cut through empty air. As he spun, I had already moved around to take position behind him.

Certain I had him, I swung《Balmung》in a diagonal slash, only to notice a blazing arrow of fire closing in from the side, forcing me to leap back.

Ahh~, so close! I was sure you’d let your guard down!

The woman shouted something in Chi*ese, but because of her, I had missed my chance to finish off the large man.

He handled our coordination without breaking a sweat. And it seems I’m losing to him in Strength.

Then I’d better be careful too. I’d lose in a straight power contest, after all.

Hey, hey, next time I wanna go flashy, so let’s attack from long range and overwhelm him with numbers!

Sounds good! Once he exposes an opening, I’ll kill him for sure!

Understood.

The three finished their exchange and took up combat stances. Immediately after, a massive number of fireballs were generated above my head and rained down with tremendous force.

“«Water Wall»”

I quickly formed a wall of water overhead, blocking the rain of fireballs.

As I was about to dash toward the three of them, the slender man sharply swung his longsword, sending a flying slash hurtling toward me.

“Huh?”

An idiotic sound slipped out of my mouth before I could stop myself. I hastily caught the flying slash with《Balmung》, feeling definite mass and momentum, which forced me back a step.

The next instant, blazing chains of fire stretched up from the ground and bound me.

Then white mist rose from the large man’s body as he drew his fist back to his waist and punched forward on the spot.

A fist formed from white mist came flying at tremendous speed, slamming into my torso protected by《Magic Carapace Armor of Queen Ant》and sending me flying far away.

After bouncing across the ground several times, I planted one hand and sprang up, regaining my stance.

Without pause, the woman fired a succession of flaming swords.

“«Fire Swords»”

I generated flaming swords around myself as well, canceling out the ones she launched.

For the moment, the battle reached a stalemate.

Those flying slashes and fists… How did they do that? Unique Skills? Weapon effects? Or abilities unlocked by top-tier classes?

Yeah, I can’t stop thinking about it.

Which is why I’m done testing the waters.

From here on out, I won’t hold anything back.

I’m going all out!

<POV: Chi*ese Female S-Rank Hunter from among the Trio Fighting Yuito>

We are S-rank hunters from Chi*a, a hunter superpower.

S-rank hunters are generally regarded as heroic symbols, but in Chi*a, with its large hunter population, they are not particularly rare.

Proof of that is the fact that even though we are upper-tier among S-rank hunters, we belong to just one of the many subordinate clans under〈Kowloon〉.

And this time, as part of the plan; to turn Japan into a vassal state, we were directly teleported in front of Japan's Hunter Guild Headquarters in Tokyo, as an advance unit.

(E/N: A vassal state, in simple terms, is a semi-independent nation that, albeit, having it's own governance, obeys a higher, more powerful nation which has either annexed the former or has signed a peace contract with to pay a fee or provide soldiers in exchange of protection. The more powerful nation is called the suzerain. Just FYI.)

To be honest, our combat strength was more than sufficient, and we thought subjugating a weak country would be easy with just the three of us.

However, just as our collaborator had warned, the fifth S-Rank Hunter, Yuito Matsubara, was dangerous.

He had the ability to deal with our coordination effortlessly, and his Strength stat seemed higher than the other two of my team.

Perhaps he was comparable to an elite member of〈Kowloon〉or even to a lower-ranked clan master within〈Kowloon〉itself.

And now, sensing danger, we swept our gazes across the surroundings.

We had blown him away with our ranged attacks, yet he didn’t appear to have taken any serious damage.

Then, just as suddenly as he switched his weapon from a longsword to a dagger, he smashed his fist hard into the ground.

A massive cloud of dust billowed up, obscuring his figure.

Several fist-sized chunks of concrete were thrown out of the dust cloud, but the two vanguards of our group shattered them with a longsword and fists.

When the thick dust finally cleared, he was gone. We searched for him using【Presence Detection】and【Mana Detection】, but couldn’t find him anywhere.

Just as we began to truly sense danger, it happened without warning. The heads of the two vanguard fell to the ground with a slight time lag, and blood sprayed violently into the air.

“Eh?”

Unable to process what had happened, I froze in shock. The next moment, my vision flipped upside down.

Still confused, I finally understood the situation when my falling head turned toward my own body.

E/N:

It might seem as if Yuito is just getting beaten up but, there's a very good reason for his action! To steal their techniques! Do you agree?

Also, I had multiple strokes editing today… One, that I was dead tired because of the upcoming exams and two, the text was confusing as hell!

Anyway, if you all still didn't understand why the guy in previous chapter called Japan weak after reading this chapter, allow me to explain.

The premise for this world is that Chi*a, with it's huge population, has numerous times more powerhouses stronger than the S-Rank Hunters of Japan. Thus, the plan to annex Japan.

But, isn't that nonsensical? There's still the army and the people of Japan and other countries won't just sit still while this war ensues. Well, just turn your brain off and enjoy, that's how the author has written this.

Also, note changes:

Magic Queen Ant Carapace Armor》 →《Magic Carapace Armor of Queen Ant

Sorry for the long text and Stay tuned!

Ayooo he just ENDED that party. Also the Ch*nese (lol) are nice enough to feed him A-rank and S-rank enemies in waves to power him up even more. By the time their top brass decides to move, the MC will have already absorbed the EXP of most of their clan.

Exactly what I was thinking! Since his Unique Skill is more efficient with human opponents in groups, the upper echelon is screwed! They messed with the wrong guy 🤣!
