Konbini Ossan Volume 8 Chapter 4 — The First Checkpoint

Descending the stairs that lead into the underground levels of the Otsugi Trading HQ and proceeding further, we emerged into a space where a pure white corridor stretched onward.

“From here on, this is the area designed for combat within the underground levels of the Otsugi Building.”

As I said this, Vladgaria looked around with interest and spoke admiringly.

“So this is it? White and beautiful, yet made of a material I have never seen.”

“Yes. This is a new ceramic material developed by Otsugi Trading.”

Ce-ram-ics, was it? I do not understand what that is, but it is something you created, yes?”

“That’s right.”

I nodded and continued my explanation.

“The ceramics used here have the effect of dispersing and permeating magic particles. Put simply, they nullify magic.”

“Oh? Nullification, you say?”

“Yes. There is a capacity limit, so it isn’t infinite, but we have ensured enough capacity that even my full-power attacks would be harmless in the checkpoint areas ahead.”

Because this material disperses and absorbs magic particles in proportion to mass, it cannot be used for things like armor.

However, in spaces like this underground area, which are designed with intense combat in mind, it serves as an excellent building material with high resistance against magical destruction.

“I see. Then there would be no issue in testing it, yes?”

“Yes. I would prefer that you refrain from attacking the corridor itself, Vladgaria, but if it’s one of the others…”

“Then, Satira.”

“Yes!”

At Vladgaria’s command, Satira extended her hand toward the wall.

Light magic converged in front of her palm, gathering sufficient energy before radiating outward like a laser.

However, the moment that magical energy collided with the wall, it dispersed completely, nullified without a trace.

“Tch.”

“I see, I see. If even Satira cannot break it, then aside from myself, none in my army would be able to destroy it.”

Satira wore a frustrated expression, while Vladgaria gazed at the wall with clear amusement.

Seeing that even Satira’s attack had been nullified, the soldiers following behind them also showed looks of surprise.

Incidentally, the magic particles absorbed by the walls are extracted externally and sent to a magic-particle storage facility located elsewhere.

Magic particles gathered from sunlight and other means are also collected at that storage facility before being redistributed for use throughout the various installations.

In a sense, it functions much like a power plant in modern Japan.

Thanks to this system, the magic particles absorbed in this space are reused, and as saturation naturally dissipates over time, there is no need to replace the materials.

Because of this highly convenient structure, the facility is also used in everyday operations as a combat training area.

“Now then, it’s about time for the First Checkpoint.”

I said this while fixing my gaze on the large door ahead. It had no handle, a shape that was surely unfamiliar to Vladgaria and the others.

“So this is a door, is it?”

“Yes. Please watch.”

I approached the door and held my palm over the authentication device installed beside it.

The device read the characteristics of my magic particles and cross-referenced them with the database.

When a match was confirmed, the lock was released, and the door slid open to either side.

“Now, it will open.”

With the authentication complete, the door to the First Checkpoint finally opened.

“Oh? This is quite… peculiar.”

Everyone stared in surprise at the sliding door, taken aback by its strangeness.

However, the real show was only just beginning.

“Please, go inside. After that, I will explain the First Checkpoint.”

Prompted by me, Vladgaria and her group filed into the First Checkpoint room.

I followed in after them.

“Now then, regarding the First Checkpoint. Your opponents will be an adventurer party that has a contract with Otsugi Trading.”

As I said this, I turned my gaze toward the adventurer party that had already been waiting inside the room.

Standing there were faces that had by now become quite familiar.

“I was starting to get bored of waiting.”

The one who muttered this was Nishina Yuki, one of the summoned heroes and also the leader of the adventurer party cooperating with us this time.

Behind her stood the other summoned heroes as well.
