Konbini Ossan Volume 7 Chapter 31 — Aftermath
After being dismissed, it seems Suzuno survived by using «Charm Magic» to control low-rank adventurers and taking their money.
Those rumors reached me about a month after her dismissal.
Naturally, using mental-affecting skills or magic like charm on humans is illegal. Suzuno was arrested, and the story spread throughout the royal capital.
Under normal circumstances, what Suzuno did would be considered a serious crime. Given the scale, there was even talk of a prison sentence of up to thirty years.
However, she was still one of the kingdom’s valuable summoned heroes.
Moreover, the noble who had previously abused her «Charm Magic» also shielded her, likely out of fear that his own crimes would come to light.
As a result, she managed to avoid being thrown into prison.
After that, she must have realized that continuing to use «Charm Magic» would only make things worse. Suzuno stopped controlling adventurers and tried to work normally.
However, after being fired from several places, her bad reputation spread so thoroughly that no one was willing to hire her anymore.
In the end, she registered as an adventurer and tried to make a living that way, but after that, no further rumors reached my ears.
People have spotted her since, so she doesn’t appear to be dead. Still, she’s said to be dressed quite shabbily and living a very difficult life.
Well, I suppose I am partly responsible for driving her into that situation.
I didn’t do anything illegal. All I did was issue a notice to my employees to ‘be cautious, as there is a former employee like this’.
Yes, to all of Otsugi Trading.
Once that happened, word spread about just how troublesome, dangerous, and harmful Suzuno was.
Those rumors eventually reached outside the company as well.
And as a result, Suzuno became known throughout the royal capital as ‘a criminal who caused serious problems even at Otsugi Trading’.
Naturally, no ordinary business would want to hire someone like Suzuno.
They wouldn’t explicitly cite her criminal record as the reason. But someone with a notorious past is inevitably viewed with suspicion.
And then, even the smallest issues are blown out of proportion.
For example, having a bad attitude, or showing no motivation.
There are countless justifiable reasons to reject her.
Once it comes to that, it’s all over. With nowhere willing to employ her, Suzuno had no choice but to become an adventurer.
And with her skill set, there’s no way she could survive as one.
Since her skill only works on the opposite sex, it’s completely useless against monsters of the same sex.
A girl who merely grows slightly faster than others has no hope of lasting in the adventurer’s line of work.
This is a profession where strong, capable adult men apply the knowledge gained from countless experiences and, even then, they sometimes lose their lives.
Safe jobs that can be completed entirely within the royal capital sit at the very bottom of the ladder, pay poorly, and after the guild takes its cut, the amount the individual receives is barely worth mentioning.
It’s not an environment a girl who until recently lived in luxury could possibly endure.
And then, about three months after Suzuno’s dismissal…
An incident occurred where Suzuno, demanding to see me, caused a disturbance at the magic item shop.
The guards rushed in immediately and apprehended her.
Suzuno was sent to jail.
Everything unfolded exactly as I had anticipated.
Now then, it’s time for the final step.
I’ll go pay a visit to Suzuno in custody.
