Soul Devourer Chapter 1 Episode 49 — The True Motive Behind the Recruitment
The two men who approached me positioned themselves at my front and back, ensuring I couldn’t escape as they led me toward the headquarters of the「Blaze Empress Brigade」.
We walked through a towering skyscraper, drawing glances from nearby hunters as we went. At the very top floor, in front of a grand set of double doors, the man who had guided me stopped.
Knock~ knock~ knock!
“Lady Karen, we’ve brought Matsubara Yuito.”
“Enter.”
At her command, the man opened the door. Inside sat a woman on an elegant sofa, legs crossed, surrounded by several high-ranking hunters standing to her left and right.
The two men who had escorted me took their places beside the others as I stepped forward.
“Sit.”
Her tone was imperious, but I sat down as told. The woman before me looked to be in her mid-twenties, sharp-eyed and confident, dressed in a crimson, Chinese-style dress.
The deep cleavage visible at her chest and the slit that revealed her bare legs were… well, hard to ignore. For a guy fresh out of high school, it was almost too much stimulation.
Still, I had to stay focused.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Matsubara Yuito, B-rank hunter.”
“B-rank? Ah, you must’ve been promoted after the Stampede. I am Miura Karen — the S-rank hunter known as the Hellblaze Empress.”
“So, what’s this about?”
“I dislike wasting words, so I’ll be direct. Join my clan.”
As expected. But seriously — why did she have to say it like that? Such a beauty, yet the arrogance ruined the charm.
(E/N: I kid you not, SAME! Fricking narcissist!)
“I’m honored, but I’ll have to decline. There’s no benefit in joining a clan.”
“How dare you!? To refuse Lady Karen’s invitation — your arrogance knows no bounds!”
(E/N: And here comes the simp, lame!)
One of the hunters barked at me, fury twisting his face. The others glared as well, some already gripping their weapons, ready to act at her signal.
“Enough!” Karen snapped, silencing them. “No benefit, you say…? Joining a clan would give you the backing of an S-rank hunter.
…
Yes, rewards are shared, but we’d also acquire more materials — meaning everyone’s take increases. There are only advantages.”
“Today, I cleared an A-rank dungeon alone. You can confirm that with the Hunter Guild if you like.”
“…”
“With that level of strength, I don’t need anyone’s backing. And even if profits increase, sharing experience points slows growth — which is far more important than money.”
“…”
“I’m not hurting for cash. So again, there’s no real merit for me.”
The Hellblaze Empress stayed silent, her sharp gaze fixed on me. After a long pause, she crossed her legs the other way and finally spoke.
“…I understand now that the usual benefits don’t appeal to you. But the real reason I wanted to recruit you is something else.”
“The real reason?”
“If what you said about the A-rank dungeon is true, it’s only a matter of time before you become an S-rank hunter. And when that happens, if you remain unaffiliated, someone will try to contact you — quietly.”
“Who would that be?”
“Foreign guild representatives. An unaffiliated S-rank hunter would be seen as a valuable military asset — and they’d try to lure you abroad with the right conditions.”
Foreign recruitment, huh… It made sense. Every country saw hunters as strategic weapons.
But leaving Japan wasn’t an option. I had a family to protect — and I loved this country.
(E/N: Tennou Heika Banzaiiiii!!! frfr)
“I’m not going anywhere abroad. Is that all you wanted to discuss?”
“…I see. Then I won’t keep you any longer. Thank you for your time. That’s all.”

E/N:
See here, kids? This woman's the textbook definition of a rude person, literally a Karen! Is she even Japanese?
Not a shred of hospitality and so obnoxious for her own benefit! No need to explain anything, just walk out 😂! Stay tuned!

I wouldn't lump her together with 'Karen', not yet. Putting aside 'The Attitude', that's sometimes necessary in such a matter and for the sake of image, her warning about foreign recruiters is the main point. It will be interesting to see how the author will develop this character and storyline, if there will be one at all.
ReplyDeleteI'm reflecting on what you said. Certainly, a certain attitude is necessary at high positions or people will undermine you. But her cronies are the one that irk me 😂
DeleteBy foreign recruiters most probably USA or China like in many other Modern Day fantasies, let's see!
