Soul Devourer Chapter 1 Episode 44 — The Endless Onslaught

After taking down the remaining two, I was about to begin dismantling them when I sensed movement — more Armored Centipedes, drawn by the sounds of battle, were charging in again.

They twisted and weaved through the sand, burrowing and emerging repeatedly, and when they closed the distance, one of them lunged to bite down on me with its powerful jaws.

“«Sand Bind»”

Chains formed from the surrounding sand shot up and wrapped around the creature, restraining its massive body.

The Armored Centipede thrashed furiously to break free, but the sand chains didn’t budge an inch.

Taking advantage of the opening, I leapt up and slammed my fist down on its head.

BANG!

The first one was dead before it knew what hit it — but from the side, another charged in. I caught its jaws from the inside, bracing my hands against them to slow its momentum.

It pushed me back several dozen meters, but I managed to halt its charge, crushed the parts I was holding, and jumped back immediately.

The Armored Centipede writhed in agony, shaking its head from side to side — and I struck it down before it could recover.

Though, judging by its movements, it could still sense the sound of shifting sand when I moved. I jumped again, caught its blind spot overhead, and slammed my fist straight down.

Half of its body disintegrated, and it sank lifelessly into the desert.

“Finally, I can start dismantl—”

Just when I thought I could take a breather, five more presences appeared, rushing toward me. I exhaled and reset my stance.

“Hah… fine. Come at me, however many you want!”

The fact that I could still feel this hot despite【Scorch Resistance】already being at Level 7 proved just how merciless this environment was for humans.

Still, if left alone, these things would invade the surface. The hunters challenging this place deserved all the respect in the world.

I should dismantle them while I can — though most of their bodies were half-destroyed, leaving no magic stones to recover.

My dagger was already broken, so I had no choice but to fight barehanded — though even I was surprised by the sheer power behind those blows.

Being able to kill an A-rank monster with a single punch was satisfying, but having a proper weapon would make things easier — and it’d keep materials intact.

“Well, I’ll just have to hope the boss has something good.”

I tore what materials I could from the remaining carcasses and stuffed them into my backpack. But since each piece was huge, even after all that fighting, I couldn’t carry much.

“I’ll need a large-capacity Magic Pouch too…”

If I were in a clan, we could take expeditions with special wagons or enchanted bags to haul huge amounts of material.

But solo, that wasn’t an option.

Magic Pouches were rare and expensive items — hard to obtain, but once you had one, transporting materials became effortless, letting even solo hunters earn a proper income.

“Guess I’ll hope the boss’s chest drops one.”

Shouldering my pack again, I was about to set off — when I sensed another presence drawing near.
