Konbini Ossan Volume 6 Chapter 1 — The End of the Journey

Whether safe was the right word or not, Mimori eventually woke, and by the next day her condition had recovered.

After that, time passed uneventfully.

The soldiers at the base thanked me again and again. I made inspections around the facility to gather ideas for new magic tools.

Colonel Gavein even presented me with an official letter of gratitude.

During all this, Arisa wasn’t depressed, but she wasn’t cheerful either. She kept staring off into the distance, as if lost in thought.

Her usual intense physical affection had completely stopped. If anything, she’d begun putting an odd amount of distance between us.

(E/N: Whose damn fault is that?! Hah?!)

It stung more than I expected, but I reminded myself that this was the plan from the beginning. This was how things should be.

After spending several days at the base, the day finally came for us to return to the capital.

Since it was a good opportunity, Kanehama and Mimori decided to return with us, making it a four-person trip.

On our final morning at the base, before departure, we exchanged farewells with Colonel Gavein.

“Well then, Otsugi-dono, allow me to say it once more. You have my deepest gratitude. Without you, not only this base but the lives of many soldiers would not have been spared.”

“I knew the risks and didn’t stop the operation. I only did what was necessary afterward.”

“Regardless, the fact remains that you saved us. I will repay this debt someday. If you ever face trouble, come to me. I will help without fail.”

“I appreciate it.”

We shook hands firmly.

After that, nothing else happened. The four of us left the base and began our journey on foot toward the nearest city.

Right after we set out, Arisa suddenly spoke.

“Hey, old man.”

“Yes? What is it?”

“On the way back… can we stop by that place? Wayne’s Vale City or whatever. Y’know, the territory lord’s mansion.”

“I don’t mind.”

I’m sure they’d welcome us. But what business did she have there?

I tilted my head.

“Did something happen?”

“Nah, it’s personal. You don’t have to worry about it.”

She jogged up beside me and declared:

“All right, then we’d better hurry! I’ve got stuff to do and things to say. Let’s move! I’m fired up now!”

Her voice sounded almost forced. She sped up and walked ahead on her own.

Seeing that, not only I but also Kanehama and Mimori exchanged puzzled looks.

“Otsugi-san. Did something happen with her?”

“Well… if I had to say, some things happened.”

“Is it my fault? Because of… what happened?”

Mimori lowered her head apologetically.

“Don’t worry about it, Mimori. I judged that the situation was fine as it was. And I don’t think that incident is the direct cause of Arisa’s behavior.”

“You think so…?”

She still looked unconvinced, her gaze downward and troubled.

Kanehama clapped his hands once and made a suggestion.

“All right. Here’s what we’ll do. Saori, go talk to Mikimoto. If you think you should apologize, then apologize. Meanwhile, I’ll hear the full story from Otsugi-san. Everything.
What happened, what the cause might be. Two people thinking together will get to the truth faster.”

“Yeah… okay. You’re right. I’ll go apologize to Arisa-chan!”

Cheered up, Mimori ran ahead to chase after Arisa.

That left only Kanehama and me.

“Well then, Otsugi-san. Mind telling me everything? Starting with what’s going on between you and Mikimoto in the first place.”

  1. I have a feeling that this will lead to Arisa accepting the position of concubine. It's gonna hurt, I'm not good with this kind of drama.
