Konbini Ossan Volume 5 Chapter 20 — Improvement Plans
When Arisa and I stepped into the square where the soldiers were lined up, it seemed word had already spread.
We were guided straight to the breakthrough unit equipped with the high-frequency blades.
After exchanging greetings with the unit commander, I finally began asking questions for the main purpose of this visit.
“Everyone, first of all, are there any complaints or major issues with the High-Frequency Blade?”
As soon as I asked, one soldier raised his hand.
“This blade’s gotta be sturdier. It snaps all the time in battle. It’s a real pain.”
The whole unit nodded. As expected, durability was a big concern.
A sword that sacrifices toughness for attack power can’t be used defensively in clashes. Even if it hits hard, the anxiety is still unavoidable.
It was obvious from the start, but this part definitely has to be addressed.
“I plan to deal with the durability issue somehow. Anything else?”
A timid-looking soldier raised his hand next.
“Um… the blade cuts too easily, so it’s kinda dangerous. I, uh, accidentally cut my senior’s leg once…”
“That’s just ‘cause you’re terrible at using it! Nobody else got hurt!”
Someone shouted that from the back, and laughter burst out across the unit. The timid soldier shrank back, but his comment was important.
The high-frequency blade was meant for use in crowded battlefields. With such extreme sharpness, even grazing an ally could injure them.
Skillful handling can prevent accidents, but it also means a single mistake can seriously hurt a comrade. This, too, should be addressed quickly.
Several more questions came up after that, but all were issues related to handling the blade. Proper explanations took care of them easily. Still, the fact that correct usage hadn’t been conveyed properly was a problem.
I might need to include manuals.
“Now then, next — has there been any trouble or discomfort with the anti-blade robe?”
Another hand shot up immediately.
“It’s a pain to use! Normal weapons are fine, but with the high-frequency blade the hem gets snagged or sliced off. It’s really inconvenient.”
“Yeah! It needs to be easier to move in, not all fluttery!”
True enough, the anti-blade robe was not form-fitting. The loose cloth getting in the way during combat was expected.
With an ordinary sword, the blade would just brush the surface. But the vibrating edge of the high-frequency blade could catch the robe, or tear it apart entirely.
“Understood. Then I’ll revise the design of the anti-blade robes used by high-frequency blade units.”
After a few more questions, no major issues came up. Since the hearing was finished, we left the square.
Right after the survey ended, the army began to march. The breakthrough unit I had questioned also headed for the front.
For now, Arisa and I were waiting inside one of the rooms in the base.
“Hey, old man. How’re you planning to improve the high-frequency blade and the anti-blade robe?”
Maybe out of boredom, Arisa leaned in and asked.
“Well, this is only at the idea stage, but…”
“Mm-hm?”
“I’m thinking of making a chainsaw.”
After a brief pause, Arisa muttered:
“…What?”
