Soul Devourer Chapter 1 Episode 5 — Solo Subjugation of the Dungeon Boss

It took a little time, but without suffering any major injuries, I defeated four goblins.

With my Endurance reaching 20, I was ready to challenge the boss.

To face the boss, I needed to find the entrance to the next floor, so I ventured deeper into the forest.

“I found it!”

I quickly spotted the entrance and dashed toward it, climbing the stairs that led upward.

At the top, a long corridor stretched out before me, dimly lit by torches on the walls to either side.

I advanced down the corridor and stopped before a massive door. Knowing the boss awaited beyond it, I decided to rest for a moment.

“Phew… Alright! Let’s do this!”

After a proper rest, I touched the boss room’s door. Slowly applying strength, the door creaked open.

Before me lay a chamber surrounded by rugged stone walls. No matter where I looked, the boss was nowhere in sight.

When I reached about the center, the door behind me suddenly slammed shut.

Instantly shifting into battle stance, I kept a sharp eye on my surroundings. Then, from above, a fist-sized orb of light descended.

The orb flared brighter and brighter, the radiance so intense I instinctively shielded my eyes with my arm.

When the glow subsided, a hobgoblin stood there with a leering grin.

“Gugya!”

It raised its club and charged forward. I caught the downward swing with my longsword, only to feel underwhelmed.

It was certainly stronger than the goblins, but weaker than I had expected.

“Looks like my decision to hunt more goblins for extra strength was the right one.”

The hobgoblin’s Strength was around 20, while mine was 32. With that clear gap, I easily fended off the ferocious strikes of its club.

“Gugyaa!”

I knocked aside its desperate swing and, seizing the opening, slashed at its exposed torso. Following the cut, its body split apart and fell — the hobgoblin was dead.

“Alright!”

As I basked in the thrill of defeating the boss solo, the hobgoblin’s corpse was enveloped in light and transformed into a treasure chest.

“Oh, a treasure chest! Let’s see what’s inside.”

I opened it and found the hobgoblin’s proof of subjugation, a magic stone, and a small vial filled with green liquid.

“This vial… I’ve seen it before. If I remember right, it’s a potion. I should confirm with the guild staff just to be sure.”

Standing on the return magic circle afterward, I was instantly teleported back near the dungeon entrance. At the Hunter Guild’s outpost, I sold the loot and had the potion examined.

“This potion can heal scratches and minor injuries. It cannot treat serious wounds or status ailments, so please be careful.”

“Thank you very much.”

After returning home and eating dinner, I reported to my father and mother.

“Dad, Mom. Today, I defeated the dungeon boss!”

“That’s amazing! And it’s only your second day as a hunter.”

“Did you find good companions already?”

“Nope. I defeated it alone!”

“I see. Taking down a boss by yourself is impressive, but isn’t it normally done by working together with allies?”

“That’s true. But I compared the boss’s strength with my own, based on what’s posted online, and I thought I could handle it solo, so I went for it.”

“I understand how you feel, but as your parents, we can’t help but worry.”

“That’s right…”

“I know. Just because I beat a boss doesn’t mean I’ll jump straight into a D-rank dungeon. I’ll challenge other E-rank dungeons first, then make my decision.”

“If you’ve thought it through, then I have nothing more to say.”

“Mm. Thanks for the meal.”

Placing my empty dish in the sink, I quickly headed upstairs.
