Soul Devourer Chapter 1 Episode 36 — The End of the Stampede
The corpses of trolls impaled on massive, mountain of metallic blades filled my vision. No matter where I looked, all that stood out was the Troll King's head.
Leaping out from the pool of blood flowing from countless bodies, I landed before the towering creature glaring straight at me.
Its enormous frame radiated such intimidation that it could crush an opponent’s will to fight.
Individually, it was an upper B-rank monster — possessing high resistance and regeneration strong enough to give even A-rank hunters trouble.
I slowly closed the distance, lowered my stance, and readied my dagger without letting my guard down. After a moment of tense standoff —
“GUAAAAAAAAH!”
The Troll King opened its massive jaws, and a deafening【Roar】shook the air, splitting the very sky with its force.
Any hunter below B-rank would have their consciousness snatched away in an instant, and even B-rank hunters would be paralyzed, left completely open.
Perhaps thinking I too was immobilized, it charged forward, its bloated belly jiggling as the ground quaked like an earthquake beneath its weight.
It closed the distance and swung its massive arm down. Cracks spread through the ground like a spider’s web, and nearby buildings began to collapse.
Using【Stealth】, I vanished from sight and slipped behind it. Bending low, I leapt upward and drove my dagger deep into its thick, log-like neck.
Unlike the earlier【Roar】, what followed was a scream of pure agony as the Troll King clutched the back of its neck in pain.
However, it seemed its resistance was higher than that of normal trolls — the poison wasn’t taking hold yet.
“Then I’ll just keep stabbing you until it does!”
I sprinted around its massive legs, driving my dagger into every part of its body I could reach.
Unable to keep up with my speed, the Troll King’s punches slammed uselessly into empty ground, until gradually, the poison began to spread through its body.
A few minutes later, the Troll King tilted its head back toward the sky, fell to its knees, and its enormous body collapsed to the ground.

The sudden outbreak of the stampede had thrown the city into chaos.
Hunters had been fighting desperately to slay the monsters and guide the civilians to safety — but just moments ago, they had been standing on the brink of despair.
The monsters had resistances to both physical and magical attacks.
Halfhearted blows were useless, and even when they managed to inflict damage, the creatures regenerated almost instantly.
With such monsters rampaging through the city in packs, both civilians and hunters suffered countless casualties.
Time and again, hunters watched their comrades get devoured right before their eyes. Their spirits, worn thin from the unending struggle, were beginning to break.
Just as their hearts were about to completely shatter, one of the trolls suddenly began clawing at its throat in agony, then collapsed to its knees and went still.
The hunters couldn’t comprehend what had happened — but then, with a thunderous rumble, giant blades erupted from the ground, impaling the trolls where they stood.
Moments later, countless fireballs formed overhead and rained down upon them. When the barrage finally ceased, every troll lay dead.
With so many eyes watching, the《Hermit’s Robe》 was of little use. A few hunters caught glimpses of a dark figure darting among the trolls.
But the Troll King, who had been leading the horde, still remained.
The figure in the jet-black robe flew straight toward it. The ground shook violently several times — and after only a few minutes, it was over.
When the same figure emerged from the other side, several hunters raised their fists to the sky and shouted from the depths of their hearts.

It's mostly fault of different novel, but I grew to hate redundant repeats. It's not bad here (yet?), but author can use little bit of editing on second part of the chapter.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing! In previous chapters the hunters' struggle was already mentioned but well, let's hope this author is good, fingers crossed!
DeleteIn that novel, redundancy is an art form in itself. You need to actually try to achieve that level. Not only repeating same things multiple times though chapter multiple times but across entire novel, as overarching part, and by multiple different characters to boot, like a washing machine. He definitely wanted us to know his critiques of modern Japan.
DeletePrevious work had some issues too (maybe better because editors done their work) but that is just 🤮. What surprise me the most it had manga adaptation.
