Soul Devourer Chapter 1 Episode 23 — Invitation to a Clan

Today, I came to the dungeon where I’d first encountered that PK party. Back then I’d run away, so it still remained unconquered.

“All right! Time to clear this place-”

“Excuse me. Are you Yuito Matsubara?”

Just as I was about to take a step forward, a voice called out from behind me. Turning around, I saw a serious-looking man in a suit and a sharp, beautiful woman beside him.

“Uh…?”

“We are hunters from the clan「King of Sword」. My name is Shigeo Tanaka.”

“And I’m Eri Watanabe.”

To think members of the most famous clan in the country would approach me directly… what could this be about?

“I’m Yuito Matsubara. So, what do you need from me?”

“We wanted to speak with you, Yuito-san. Would you mind changing locations so we can talk privately?”

“Understood.”

I followed them into a café with private rooms. “Please feel free to order whatever you like,” they said, so I ordered a melon soda.

Once the drink was brought and I’d taken a sip to wet my throat, Shigeo-san began to speak.

“Thank you for taking the time to meet us. To get straight to the point — we’re here to invite you to join our clan.”

Seriously? Being scouted by a major clan like this… I couldn’t help but feel honestly happy. But what reason would they have to recruit me?

“Why me?”

“As part of our clan’s activities, gathering information about promising hunters is essential.
You’ve already been promoted to D-rank, and it seems you’ve even cleared a C-rank dungeon. And solo, no less.”

“That’s right.”

“To be honest, your promotion speed and clear rate are unheard of. And since you’ve done it solo, even compared to domestic S-rank hunters, your talent stands out.”

“Thank you.”

“From all this, we believe you possess a Unique Skill — a very powerful one at that.”

They’d already guessed that much, huh. Given how unusual my record was, I could see how they reached that conclusion.

But revealing that I had a Unique Skill would be reckless. Their rarity made them far too dangerous to expose lightly.

“I understand what you’re saying. But I don’t have a Unique Skill.”

When I denied their assumption, both of them focused their eyes on me, trying to read the truth from my expression.

So I simply closed my eyes and took another sip of melon soda.

(E/N: 😂 Never have I seen an MC who closes his eyes in the face of intimidation or interrogation.)

“…I see. Regardless, your ability is undeniable. We would very much like for you to join our clan.”

Even though I denied it, they hadn’t explained the basis of my strength — meaning their opinion hadn’t changed.

“Can I decide after hearing more about it first?”

“Of course. Our main activities include resource collection, clearing dungeons to prevent stampedes, and assisting in the capture of criminal hunters.”

So they handled dangerous work beyond dungeon raids too.

“If you join, you’ll receive various forms of support — from party coordination and weapon supply to free housing within our facilities.”

For a major clan, they’d surely have access to top-grade equipment and items. And free housing sounded like a real advantage.

So far, I didn’t see any major downsides…

“Would there be any obligations if I joined?”

“Yes. When the clan issues a request, you’ll generally be required to respond.”

Annoying, but still within acceptable limits.

“Is that all?”

“What do you mean?”

“As you know, I usually operate solo. If I join the clan, will I still be allowed to do that? And what happens to any equipment or items I find in treasure chests?”

“…For promising hunters, we’d prefer you to operate as safely as possible. Ideally, we’d assign clan members to form a party with you.
As for equipment and items, they would go to whoever in the party is best suited to use them.”

So forming a party was mandatory then.

Sure, soloing was dangerous, but being alone meant keeping all the experience and loot — the fastest way to grow stronger.

Besides, coordinating tactics and watching out for others was a hassle. And I wasn’t confident I could protect anyone else’s life.

“…I’m sorry, but I’ll have to decline.”
