Soul Devourer Chapter 1 Episode 20 — Saving a Woman from Assault

Relying on the light of my torch, I walked down the long corridor leading to the boss room when I heard the sound of a woman’s distressed voice from up ahead.

I rushed toward the sound and saw a man pinning a woman down.

Two other men stood nearby, wearing vulgar grins as they watched without stopping him.

Sensing something clearly wrong, I called out cautiously.

“What are you doing?”

“Huh? Well, that’s rare. Didn’t think I’d see another hunter here.”

“Yeah, seriously. And… looks like he’s alone too.”

“Damn it, right when it was getting good! Who the hell are you supposed to be?”

“I’m the one asking questions here. What exactly were you planning to do to that woman?”

“Hah? Whatever we do is our business. But you’re unlucky, kid. Can’t just let you walk away after seeing this.”

The man released the woman and turned to face me. From the other two, I could feel killing intent radiating — it seemed a fight was unavoidable.

“Die!”

The brawny fighter lunged forward, throwing punches and kicks. But for some reason, his movements felt slow to me.

“Damn it! You’re good at dodging, huh? Then how about this!”

His attacks grew faster. Still, they weren’t fast enough to hit me. He had probably activated【Physical Enhancement】.

I sidestepped a kick and vanished using 【Stealth】.

“What the—!? Where did you—”

Seeing the two panic, I closed the distance before they could get into formation.

I aimed for the mage, but the swordsman stepped in and blocked with his greatsword.

“Gwaaaah!”

My longsword bit deep into his shoulder. I slashed off his arm, and before he could recover from the agony, I finished him off.

“Sousuke too!? P-please, I surrender! Spare my life!”

I stopped my advance. If he had no intention to fight anymore, then the battle was over. I could just take him outside and leave the rest to the authorities.

But when I glanced away to check on the woman —

“Idiot! Die! «Earth Javelin»!”

When I turned back, a spear of earth was already flying toward me. There wasn’t time to swing my sword, and the woman was right behind me.

I crossed my arms in front of me to guard. The earthen spear hit directly, but I only felt a dull pain — no real damage.

“No way! You took that head-on and didn’t even get hurt!?”

So his earlier plea for mercy was just to make me drop my guard. If our stats were closer, I might’ve been the one dead.

“W-wait! That was just a joke! So please, my life-”
