Soul Devourer Chapter 1 Episode 11 — Promotion
As I was tying my shoelaces at the entrance, getting ready to head toward the nearest C-rank dungeon, I suddenly remembered something important.
That was the fact that I couldn’t challenge a C-rank dungeon yet.
The reason was simple: the dungeons that can be challenged have rank restrictions.
In my case, I was only allowed up to D-rank dungeons. To challenge a C-rank dungeon, I first needed to be promoted to D-rank.
It must have been explained back when I registered as a Hunter, but I hadn’t expected to be able to take one on this soon, so I had completely forgotten.
I was thinking I might change my plans and try another D-rank dungeon when my phone rang.

“This is Shimizu from the Hunter Guild. Based on Matsubara-sama’s record of achievements, you have been promoted to D-rank.

The timing was perfect, so I decided to head to the Guild first.

As he took his newly updated Hunter ID and quickly left, I continued to watch the young man’s back with my eyes.
It wasn’t that I had any feelings for him.
Just earlier, while processing the renewal, I had checked the date of his initial registration. Only a few days had passed.
And yet, given that he had already sold the materials from High Orcs and High Ogres, that meant he had cleared two D-rank dungeons in such a short time.
I had been working at the Hunter Guild for over five years, but I had never seen a rookie promoted so quickly.
Could it be… he obtained a Unique Skill?
If that were the case, then such an astonishing rate of promotion would make sense.

After completing the update for my Hunter ID, I headed once again to the C-rank dungeon.
“Phew… Alright! I’ll be fine.”
With slightly tense steps, I moved through the forest when I heard the sound of the wind being cut overhead.
Instinctively, I cut down the flying arrow and caught sight of my attacker.
It was about the same height as a Hobgoblin, with a wolf’s head and a body covered in white fur — a higher species of High Kobold, a Kobold Archer, glaring down at me from the branch above.
As I rushed forward, another arrow flew.
After cutting it down again, the Kobold Archer leapt off the branch a short distance ahead and readied its bow once more.
This is my chance!
Closing the distance, I swung my longsword, but the Kobold Archer quickly lowered its bow and leapt backward.
“Next time for sure — GuGh…! Ngh, what!?”
As I tried to step forward, I was suddenly slashed across the back.
Whirling around, I saw a Kobold Assassin, holding a short sword dripping with blood.
“Tch… So I was lured in.”
Fortunately, thanks to the difference between my Endurance value and the Kobold Assassin’s Strength, the wound across my back was shallow.
I could heal it later with a potion. For now, the question was how to deal with these two.
Their style seems to be long-range harassment with sudden surprise attacks. In that case-!
After fighting them twice in the same way, I noticed something: the Kobold Assassin always attacked from behind.
If its behavior pattern was fixed, then I could work around it. Without taking my eyes off either of them, I healed the wound on my back with a potion.
I dashed once again toward the Kobold Archer, deliberately luring the Assassin.
The moment the Archer lowered its bow, I spun around and slashed the Assassin diagonally across the torso.
