Konbini Ossan Volume 4 Chapter 8 — A Vague Excuse and a Tangled Misunderstanding
“Ah… Marceline-dono. About that matter, it isn’t quite the situation you think it is.”
Choosing my words carefully, I tried to clear up Marceline’s misunderstanding.
That said, since I hadn’t yet decided how to handle Shirley, I didn’t want to spread too many details. In the end, I could only string together vague excuses.
“It’s not exactly marriage, or rather, it hasn’t reached that point yet.”
“Hah? And what’s that supposed to mean?”
Marceline furrowed her brows. Before she pressed me further, I needed to dodge responsibility smoothly.
“No, it isn’t that I have no intention of marrying in the future. It’s just that, in supporting a particular woman, I haven’t yet secured a sufficient position for myself.
…
Looking ahead, circumstances can always change. So until I have the wealth to provide for those who need providing for, and the authority to protect those who must be protected, I don’t intend to settle down.”
I managed to explain my situation without touching on the specifics.
In short, I couldn’t marry until I had secured safety in this world and could protect the heroes.
My first priority was keeping the children destined for war and Arisa-san safe.
To marry or have children now, increasing the number of people I would need to protect, would simply be too heavy a burden.
Of course, I intended to take responsibility toward those who looked up to me, but that would have to wait until things had settled down.
Marceline should have understood my goals well enough to infer the rest.
“I see. So that’s how it is.”
Marceline nodded several times. It seemed she had understood.
“In other words, it isn’t just those three wives—you intend to take even more. Who can say who else might join them in the future?
…
With a mere honorary noble title, it would be difficult to marry multiple women of noble standing, such as myself. That is why you aim to rise higher, is it not?”
She didn't understand at all!
This was troublesome. Without laying everything bare, it would be nearly impossible to correct her misunderstanding.
Just as I was wavering over whether to reveal the truth, Marceline pressed even harder.
“If that’s the situation, then it cannot be helped. I shall simply wait until Otsugi-dono rises high enough to take me as his wife.”
For some reason, in Marceline’s mind, she had already secured her place as my bride.
Most likely she had mistaken my words to mean I was raising my status for the sake of gathering wives.
Why would I need to rise in status to increase wives? To marry women of higher standing, of course.
And among those close to me of noble rank, the only one who fit that description was Marceline.
In short, her misinterpretation led directly to the conclusion that I would marry her.
What a troublesome misunderstanding. Untangling this would be no easy feat.
That left me with only one option.
“If someday there comes a truly important woman, I will be the one to go and bring her home.”
“Ah! Then I shall look forward to that day!”
Push all the trouble aside for now.
As long as I didn’t make a firm denial, I could come up with an excuse later.
At least, that’s what I told myself — as a way to escape from reality.
